This basically already happened. It’s where the “80% of trans kids desist” stat comes from, the one now used to justify denying trans kids healthcare. The studies behind it (mainly Toronto & Amsterdam clinics, 2008–2013) used the old DSM childhood diagnosis, which didn’t require a kid to say they were another gender. Liking the “wrong” toys or clothes could be enough, so tomboys and feminine boys got counted as “trans children.” Some studies even included kids who didn’t meet that loose diagnosis at all. Kids who didn’t respond to follow-up were counted as desisters by default instead of being removed. Being gay or bi was seen as "desisting" from gender non-conformity. I guess they didn't think being a feminine man is gender non-conforming when it's a gay guy doing it? 🙄 They followed a bunch of tomboys and feminine boys, watched most of them grow up to be lesbians and gay men, and that’s now quoted as proof trans kids "grow out of it" The worst fucking part: the Toronto clinic openly tried to make kids "comfortable with their assigned gender", by its own director’s account, and that outcome then got counted as kids naturally “desisting.” The clinic was (obviously) accused of conversion therapy got shut down in 2015 following an external review. Despite all that, the study proved that kids with more intense dysphoria were far more likely to persist. The ones who clearly met the criteria mostly grew up trans. Research has to separate gender nonconformity from actual dysphoria, or you end up with stats like this one.
