This plan is absurd. DC already has some of the most tenant-friendly laws in the country. And most landlords are operating on tight margins, between mortgages, taxes, and maintenance costs.
Asking landlords to give up a month of rent in the face of rising costs (not to mention the property tax hike that the DC Council is considering) is not reasonable. And you would be incentivizing tenants not to pay in hopes of cutting a deal. Bad policy all around.

DC Schools Spend $1B+ a Year While Half of Kids Still Can’t Read at Grade Level
D.C. Public Schools’ administration budget jumped 38% between 2020 and 2025 while the overall budget rose 50%, yet student enrollment only grew about 2%. Despite spending over $1 billion annually while half of kids still aren’t reading at grade level.

According to this study by Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland, “violence interruption” actually increased violence in DC.
For years D.C. has held out hope that violence interruption programs would meaningfully decrease shootings and killings. A recent study finds they may have done the opposite. Now the fate of the entire initiative is up in the air, reports @jennygathright: washingtonsun.com/metro/dc-v…

An awkward reckoning for DC’s propaganda crowd like @maustermuhle : the violence interruption programs they championed may have made the killing worse. Criminals need consequences. Residents deserve safety. Who answers for policies sold as compassion if they cost people their lives?

There's a new version of this post
It's ridiculous that DC's Democrats are so hopped up over this. The Home Rule Act specifically reserves two at-large seats (out of 13) for people not in the majority party. Congress's intent was to ensure diversity of thought on the Council. In fact, I'm told that Democrats were some of the most ardent voices for having this provision, because they understood the dangers of one-party rule.
The system worked for a long time. DC had Republicans on the Council through 2008, but since then, both of the reserved seats have gone to Democrats who have simply disaffiliated from the party for the purpose of running for those seats.
Phony "independents" are contrary to the spirit of the law. The DC Council needs real opposition voices.
The "pick-two" era of D.C. Council at-large races is officially over.
Under ranked-choice voting, does your second vote count? If your #1 choice wins outright, it doesn't.
How the new math is changing D.C. elections and campaigns for @washingtonsun: washingtonsun.com/metro/dc-r…
Glad to see this investigation is happening.
If we want to save our system of self-government, jurors need to participate in the process in good faith, rather than go into the courtroom with the premeditated idea to nullify no matter what.
Mainstream Americans, whether left, right, or center, agree that we need the rule of law to preserve our freedom and prosperity.
But the DSA (which has a lot of overlap with "Free DC" and the other groups doing jury nullification workshops) openly says it wants to abolish our system of checks and balances and make the House the only entity with any power. They openly say they want to replace our system of competitive elections with a "mass political party" that "represents everyone."
This nullification effort is grounded in an ideology that wants to abolish the police and the criminal justice system and ultimately end the rule of law in favor of a Cuba or Venezuela-style system. Those regime types only bring tyranny, poverty, and despair.
I'm glad Chairman Comer is working to shut this nonsense down.
SCOOP: @GOPoversight is requesting info from leftist groups Free DC and Harriet's Wildest Dreams over their jury nullification trainings that @KaelanDC and I brought into the spotlight.
"It is clear that the position of Free DC and Harriet’s Wildest Dreams is that potential jurors should not make decisions impartially based on applying the law as instructed to the facts presented before them in the case, but based on their subjective, personal beliefs and activist agendas," reads one of two letters we obtained.
The requests are not legally binding unless the committee escalates with subpoenas later. We'll be watching and highlighting any updates.

DC’s Initiative 82: Bigger Bills & Closed Restaurants
Initiative 82 phased in a higher minimum wage for tipped service workers in Washington, D.C., lifting the base rate toward $18. Restaurant owners responded with extra fees—often 6–7% labeled as an I-82 charge—on top of existing restaurant fees and 15–20% tips, so checks that once looked like $100 can land closer to $250. Is it a surprise that restaurants in the district keep closing?

Per the DC Auditor, the DC Public Schools budget is over $1 billion per year. It in fact grew by 50% between 2020 and 2025, even though the number of students only grew by 2.6%. And the "Central Administration" grew by 38% during that time.
Apparently these administrators can't even be bothered to show up to do the work for which we, the taxpayers, are paying because they are too busy collecting additional paychecks from other jobs.
DC, let's get our act together.

The RENTAL Act made it easier to evict someone who is violent towards building staff/residents.
Implementation of this provision is stalled because the Public Defender Service is attempting to overturn it after the Judge in the case called them.

DC taxpayers spent almost twice that to fund the campaigns of the same council members who created the program that gives themselves millions of dollars.
House lawmakers spent $6.7 million of taxpayer money on meals and lodging last year — a 21 percent increase over 2024 — under a reimbursement program that doesn’t require them to provide receipts, a Post analysis found.

DC's fiscal irresponsibility creates the perfect conditions for corruption to take root and become endemic. We spend more taxpayer dollars per capita than anywhere else in the country and inevitably, city contractors will want a bigger and bigger piece of the pie. So they bribe whomever they can, from elected officials to city employees.
Trayon White is only the latest manifestation of a long-standing problem. Last year, the deputy director of the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement pled guilty to taking a bribe. And there are plenty of other examples.
This will only stop when we change our politics. We must build a conservative ecosystem that is actually capable of winning local elections in DC. Even one councilmember would make a big difference. One-party rule is running us into the ground.
Good. It’s not acceptable for an elected official to take envelopes of cash from a contractor. Trayon White must be held accountable for his corrupt actions.
DC should set an example for the rest of the country and the world by having the cleanest local government. Corruption happens when we choose to tolerate it. It is not inevitable. So let’s make better choices here in DC and stop tolerating (and rewarding) corruption.
Just In: U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro says her office will re-try Councilmember Trayon White on a bribery charge after the mistrial. "We have video showing piles of cash being given to a D.C. councilmember.” trib.al/mp4sxsh
Important point from Jett Jasper, our Republican candidate for DC Council in Ward 1: All of the voters he meets, whether left, center, or right, want public safety. No one wants crime. But the Dems are completely out of touch, especially the DSA. The DSA wants to defund the police, abolish the criminal justice system, and in fact, abolish the Constitution. Their ideas are a recipe for crime and chaos.
The Democratic Party has been hijacked by whack jobs. This is why Republicans need to make ourselves capable of winning in our cities.
My hat is off to Jett and all the other candidates taking on the crazies. A great nation needs flourishing cities and our cities will only flourish if we change our local governments.

DC’s Public Safety Fight
Jett Jasper is challenging a DSA-backed Democrat in D.C. who wants to defund the Metropolitan Police Department and abolish the jail system. He argues MPD is already down about 800 officers and that fully staffing the force is the only way to deliver the public safety residents actually want.

Oh man, people just don't get it. Mamdani is playing the long con. He's consolidating power ahead of these elections by acting as normal as he can muster, so in the NEXT election cycle he can plausibly say "they said I was crazy! See? Socialists aren't so bad!" Then he can get more socialist allies elected (especially at a state level where he needs them), consolidate exponentially more power, and then the commies can actually execute their evil communist plans they're always saying they'll do: let all the criminals out of prison, abolish the police, seize your property, and destroy western civilization. I'm stunned by how many people fall for this scammer. The fact that nobody in media is pointing this out makes me very concerned about our prospects as a country.
It would be insane for the DC Council to levy new taxes now. Our city’s economic indicators are “flashing red.
We have a spending problem, not a revenue problem. Let’s get our fiscal house in order so that our economy can grow. We must do this in order to keep the American Dream alive in our nation’s capital.
We have numbers for the proposed pied-à-terre tax in D.C. There’s 2 versions: @ChmnMendelson and @CMFrumin. The Frumin version isn’t online, but I got a copy; it could bring in an estimated $130M over 4 years. It levies more than Mendo’s …
