After Nirmal Verma died, many of his readers travelled from Jodhpur to Delhi with Vijaydana Detha for his funeral:

Partition "bifurcated a thousand years of consolidation and creation of one of the most unique, influential and impactful blocs in Islamic history"👇. Reducing India to a bloc in islamic history. Hamid Dalwai was spot-on - these islamists are too illiterate to even mask..
This fallacy (romanticism if one is feeling generous), has sustained at least two generations associated with our polity. Such thinking pre-supposes - and encourages others to believe - Partition, arguably the singularly most detrimental catastrophe faced by the Muslims of the Indian Sub-continent in our history, was something in the interests of, or was largely supported by an overwhelming number of Muslims of present day India. Despite the fact that it bifurcated a thousand years of consolidation and creation of one of the most unique, influential and impactful blocs in Islamic history. This trope also ignores - in a very gullible fashion - how the very real and enormous complexity of the amalgamation and accession of the Princely States into India was wrought and engineered. What concessions were asked for, how treaties were trampled upon and what compromises entailed. The facts remain as they are: an impoverished British Empire - drained from a six year long World War - could no longer hold on to its Indian Dominion and couldn’t wait to exit. Mr. Jinnah desperately wanted his cake but didn’t live long enough to eat it. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in his turn - and often against the prevailing view of his own party - recognised the inevitability of a plural and strong democratic republic, if India was to survive and sustain itself. Consequently he supported the idea of a democratic polity that cultivated its internal diversity. As such secularism was never a creed or culture but a political necessity for India, with its own distinct features and characteristics; which are quite different to what classical ‘Secularism’ means in a Western context. It was neither invented at Independence and nor did it require invention. It was a natural state of tolerance that placed coexistence - by and large - above division, historically. It did not therefore have a religious origin. Since Mr. @DrSYQuraishi is neither gullible nor ill-informed, I can only hazard guesses for why he would have us believe what he is saying.

"Why, then, are demands for Muslim political autonomy so readily interpreted through communalism, separatism and threats to national unity?"👇 Only an absolute illiterate wud *not* know the ans to the qtn, its literally staring as natl consciousness w/dates - 1947, 1990...
“The controversy, therefore, is less about Sharjeel’s proposals than the anxieties they expose; a political imagination that can accommodate Muslims as vulnerable minorities requiring protection but remains deeply unsettled by their assertion as autonomous political subjects. The asymmetry is revealing; Dalit mobilisation through the Bahujan Samaj Party, regional autonomy through Dravidian politics and Hindu nationalist mobilisation demonstrate how collective identities can become the basis of organised political power, although each has encountered distinct forms of opposition. Why, then, are demands for Muslim political autonomy so readily interpreted through communalism, separatism and threats to national unity? The issue is not the legitimacy of criticism but the ideological assumptions that determine which political claims appear legitimate before their substance has been examined.” Shaheen Kattiparambil, University of Leeds, writes: maktoobmedia.com/share/11678…

When Maulana Bhasani realized that partition was going to happen on demographic lines, he facilitated mass scale settlement of Bengali Muslims into Assam so that Assam would go to Pakistan. During Sylhet referendum, his Muslim league cadre blocked Hindus lest they wanted to vote.
Oh yea, how can we forget another hero of the leftist jihadis- Maulana Bhashani- who was the architect of what Lord Wavell called the 'Grow more Muslims' campaign in Assam. He campaigned heavily for inclusion of Assam within Pakistan, and even after formation of Bangladesh in

We had a blast yesterday at the launch event of @newdelhireview’s inaugural issue. If you missed it, you can still be a part of the celebrations by ordering a copy from newdelhireviewofbooks.in/p/g… Also, please don’t ask me for copies. I’ve already given out my spare personal copies and have only one remaining.

What an evening! @sanjeevsanyal is a rockstar, and when he speaks, you must listen. This is the making of an institution and an attempt at genuine intellectual pluralism. Cheers to many more such issues!
Last evening, at The Dome, Ambassador, we launched the much-awaited inaugural issue of New Delhi Review of Books with Mr @sanjeevsanyal gracing our event as Chief Guest. Mr Sanyal urged India to ‘reverse the gaze’ and examine the world on its own terms. He encouraged our young team to value longevity, consistency, and quality over rapid expansion.

"these leaders believe that the greatest injustice to Indian Muslims is the simple fact that there is a majority of Hindus in this country" --- Hamid Dalwai As usual, it took a Bombay grandee to see thru and ID the real angst of the islamists...

Our Editor-in-Chief, Mr @premanshsinha, and Publisher, Mr @Ananth_KrishnaS, also addressed the gathering. Mr Sinha spoke of the review essay as a discipline: it must engage with a book’s arguments, references, and evidence, and called NDRB an institution in the making. Mr Krishna called for genuine intellectual pluralism and rigorous, non-doctrinal thinking, judging books by the strength of their arguments rather than the fashion of their politics.

The committed democrat, which Sharjeel Imam is: - doesn't believe in secularism or Indian Constitution. - Loves Jinnah while condemning Gandhi as a fascist. - knows more about Saeed Anwar's wife than Ganguly - celebrates the victory of Pakistan over India - Absolves Jinnah for partition but blames Congress for it People like Asim love Imam for embodying these very qualities; democracy for them is equivalent to following the ideals of Islamism.
