Die Mimik der Tethys ("The Facial Expressions of Tethys") by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Russland braucht Frieden! Besser heute als morgen. Oder?! …

wsj.com/world/europe/canadia… That's a great piece! Congrats! Only I do argue with the Headline, given that not Carney steered Europe away from the US but Trump did (trade wars, Greenland!). And the article explains exactly this in a great, very insightful way! @DanMichaelsWSJ @drewhinshaw @JoeWSJ

How German Physicists Made a “Black Hole” Evaporate in the LabIn a groundbreaking experiment, physicists at the University of Paderborn in Germany have created the first laboratory model of a black hole’s event horizon — and watched it slowly “evaporate” right before their eyes.By recreating the physics of Hawking radiation and its elusive backreaction, they’ve achieved something never seen before: a miniature black hole analogue that loses energy exactly as Stephen Hawking predicted. The results, published in Nature, represent a major leap in our understanding of one of the universe’s most extreme phenomena. How They Did It Real black holes are surrounded by overwhelming cosmic noise, making true Hawking radiation almost impossible to detect. So the team built an artificial event horizon using an optical crystal (a waveguide). They fired a powerful, ultra-short laser pulse through the crystal. This pulse dramatically changed the material’s refractive index, creating a moving “boundary” that light could not cross — the laboratory equivalent of a black hole’s event horizon. A weaker probe beam then encountered this artificial horizon. What happened next was extraordinary: The team detected pairs of new signals in the ultraviolet range — the lab version of Hawking radiation. They observed clear energy transfer: the “black hole” gave up energy to create this radiation. The system began to lose energy, mimicking how a real black hole should slowly evaporate over time. Surprisingly, the energy transfer turned out to be much simpler and more linear than theorists expected — no complex cascade of interactions, just a direct, elegant process. Why This MattersThis is the first time scientists have observed the backreaction — the way the black hole itself reacts to the radiation it emits. Understanding this mechanism could bring us closer to solving one of physics’ greatest mysteries: the black hole information paradox.

Maritime blindness is celebrating Iran's decision to charge a "fee" for Strait of Hormuz transit, but many fail to recognize that free and unobstructed maritime trade and traffic have historically been crucial to the global welfare and development we enjoy today. Approximately 80% of our goods are transported by sea, and no other mode of transportation can match the efficiency of moving large volumes at low costs over long distances. Maritime shipping helps keep prices down for everything we purchase. Conversely, when navigation is free and safe, economies can thrive, prices remain reasonable, and supply chains function effectively. This issue pertains to the stability and prosperity of the entire modern world.

Your reminder that, under the JCPOA, this sanctions relief was only provided AFTER Iran implemented ALL of its nuclear commitments, and those actions were verified by the IAEA. Now Iran is getting that relief just for signing an agreement that requires zero nuclear concessions. (I'm sorry, promising not to build a bomb and to talk about its nuclear program later don't count.)
This is crucial bit. Iran can repatriate sales. “The provision for waivers of sanctions on oil sales takes effect immediately upon signing the agreement this week and also covers necessary services including banking, transportation and insurance needed to facilitate the sales.”

Hi Glenn, Bart here. I can explain international maritime law to you, and maybe you would then understand that freedom of navigation does not apply to stateless ships. This vessel is stateless as it was flying the flag of Madagascar but was not registered there. The reason? Because normally the flag state would be responsible for safety, security, and labour laws on board a ship. As the vessel is stateless, there is no flag state. As such, a port or coastal state has the authority (given by UN international maritime law) to board and detain a vessel to ascertain the nationality and basically act as a flag state. The coastal state is allowed to enforce these laws in international waters (the coastal state becomes the de facto flag state). Why would we allow such a thing? You see, when a ship would ground, sink, and/or get damaged and oil would spill on our coasts and kill birds, destroy the livelihood of fishermen, the tourist industry, and destroy nature, the insurance of the vessel would pay for the damages. As the vessel is stateless, there is no insurance company. So if a vessel were to flounder, the cost would fall on the citizens of the coastal state that got hit by the oil spill and not the shipping company. That's why, when UNCLOS 82 was negotiated, a lot of countries made sure that there were provisions so that a coastal state could take these vessels and remove them from our seas. Now, concerning sanctions. Of course, you can not enforce them in international waters on a ship flying a foreign flag. You would only be able to enforce those if the ship were flying the flag of your own country and/or if the ship were to sail in your territorial waters. (A vessel sailing through your territorial waters has to adhere to the laws of the coastal state and, as such, adhere to any sanctions, even unilateral sanctions.) But here's the thing. As I explained before, there is no flag state, so the coastal state has become the de facto flag state of the boarded vessel. And guess what... now the vessel has to adhere to unilateral sanctions. I'm really happy I could explain this to you. Best regards
