When people hear the word Tokyo, they picture neon billboards, thirty-seven million people, and the busiest train stations on Earth.
Yet this island in the middle of the Philippine Sea is officially part of Tokyo. Every car on the island wears a Tokyo license plate.
This is Aogashima, an active double-caldera volcano rising 1,380 feet straight out of the deep blue ocean, two hundred and twenty miles south of the capital. Inside a massive outer ring of jagged volcanic cliffs sits a second, smaller green cone called Maruyama.
Only about 160 people live inside the crater, making it the smallest municipality in Japan. There is one general store, one post office, and zero traffic lights. The only way in is a twenty-minute ride on a nine-seat commuter helicopter or a small ferry that can only dock when the ocean waves allow it.
Living inside an active volcano comes with a perk. Around the inner crater, natural geothermal steam vents called Hingya hiss out of the earth.
Locals do not need gas stoves to cook lunch at the park. They place sweet potatoes, eggs, and fresh fish inside wooden boxes built directly over the volcanic vents and steam them for free. They even use the volcanic heat to evaporate ocean water into prized mineral salt.
At night, with zero city lights for two hundred miles, the sky above the crater turns into a solid ceiling of stars.

This is not so much Olivia’s fault as every citizen who walked around or over these dozen bolts along a busy streetcar stop and assumed it wasn’t a problem and/or someone else would fix it.
I almost didn’t bother but

This is on us — and we deserve the leaders we get.

Not sure which is responsible but a whole series of exposed bolts are at the 511 NB stop at 429 College

'Ten Cents a Ride.' (1942) Louis Bouché is known as a painter of the American scene. In a 1962 New York Times review, the art critic Stuart Preston described him as 'an American realist who finds poetry, but not obvious poetry, in the commonplace.'

Chow’s supporters correctly countered the perception that crime is worse in the City since she took over … and imo profoundly screwed up by insinuating anyone disturbed by the overall rise in disorder since 2019 was therefore a right wing shill.
Acknowledge a level of general anxiety as well as the noticeable deterioration in public spaces since pre-pandemic BEFORE you educate people out of their impressions.
It feels like gaslighting and disrespect to their experiences.
If you appear to be inferring weakness, intolerance or bad reasoning don’t be surprised at pushback, initially from BB partisans but more importantly from undecided voters.

The truth is you’re less likely to be murdered or be sexually assaulted and that’s amazing.
You’re more likely to have your car stolen, be assaulted or be a victim of break and enter. These are the most common crimes.

Policemen in hospital, thousands of arrests, historic buildings burnt to the ground, museums closed, and still the riots in France have not yet reached the threshold of threat that caused Justin Trudeau (with support and encouragement from Freeland and Carney) to declare a national emergency. Amazing.

I hear the robot lady saying du-PONT.
Don’t we say DU-pont?

The little TV on Line 1 trains showed some station art; I caught a glimpse of the amazing mosaic at Chester.

'Speed' derives from the Old English 'spēd,' which referred to good fortune/success.
This sense of 'speed' lives on in 'Godspeed':
"God spede you" = "God prosper you"
We hope this brings you up to speed.
Leadership amid change is hard; yes.
It involves “carrying along” and persuading dissenters.
Does it require ignoring those who will be affected negatively? Does the columnist recognize whom this may include or is it assumed only car drivers are going to be impacted?
