As an SOE agent in the Spindle circuit, Odette Sansom Hallowes endured brutal Gestapo interrogation and torture before being imprisoned in Ravensbrück concentration camp.
After the war, she gave evidence against prison guards accused of war crimes at the 1946 Hamburg Ravensbrück trials, helping bring them to justice.
Her courage and service were later commemorated by Royal Mail, which featured her on a postage stamp in its Britons of Distinction series in 2012:
who invited him here
This is Theo Gottshalk. He threatened a teenager with a machete in broad daylight in a Nottingham city centre fast food restaurant.
He told the boy he would chop his arm off if he refused to hand over his mobile phone.
The 20-year-old took the phone, a bracelet, and a chain before fleeing the scene on Woolpack Lane.
A few weeks later, someone recognised him on a Nottingham bus and called the police.
Officers tracked him down and followed him into the McDonald's on Clumber Street. Gottshalk violently resisted arrest and tried to fight his way out.
The struggle ended when a police officer deployed a Taser on the now-shirtless man.
As the Taser hit, a large, red-handled machete dropped out of his trousers. It perfectly matched the weapon described by the teenager he had robbed.
Police also found Class B drugs hidden on him during the search.
It turns out he had also committed two other robberies in Birmingham, and he had previously been caught carrying a converted blank firing pistol.
Detective Constable Ben Grayson says Gottshalk thought nothing of putting lives at risk.
"He was at this point a danger to the wider public and I am pleased he has now been held to account," he says.
Gottshalk was handed an extended 13-year custodial sentence at Birmingham Crown Court.

Kenny Cox, 46, has been jailed for 14 years after being convicted of two counts of rape and one count of attempted rape involving two women he met on the dating app Tinder.
On November 7, 2021, Cox met his first victim through Tinder and went with her to a property in Salford. After drinking alcohol together, the woman began to feel hazy, describing herself as feeling paralysed and unable to move. Cox raped her while she was in this state. Once she was able to move, she escaped by taxi and reported the attack to police. Cox was arrested on November 14, 2021, and released on bail under strict no-contact conditions.
On September 4, 2024, Cox met his second victim through the dating app and took her to a property in Salford, where he took drugs. He began removing her clothing and blocked the door to prevent her from leaving before assaulting her. She eventually escaped and confided in a relative, who contacted police. Cox was arrested on September 8, 2024, charged and remanded in custody.
Cox’s first trial in March 2025 ended with a hung jury. At his retrial in August 2026, a jury found him guilty of two counts of rape and one of attempted rape after deliberating for less than two hours.
Both victims described the lasting impact of the attacks. The first victim described the past five years as extremely difficult, saying the emotional and physical effects persisted despite the guilty verdict. She felt relief at finally being believed and hoped to rebuild her confidence and trust. The second said the experience had changed her life and that she wanted to regain her independence, feel safe going outside alone and trust people again.
On October 23, 2026, Cox was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court to 14 years in prison, followed by an extended four-year licence period. He was also given an indefinite restraining order protecting both victims and an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Detective Sergeant James Walsh, of Greater Manchester Police’s Salford Criminal Investigation Department, described Cox as a violent sexual offender who preyed on both women, praising their courage in coming forward and enduring the trial process twice.

🚨 CHILD ABUSE IMAGE DISTRIBUTOR AVOIDS IMMEDIATE JAIL - SOME VICTIMS AS YOUNG AS 3
Gary Oglesby, 67, of Anlaby Common, used apps to conceal indecent images of children, including a “Secret Photo Vault”, Hull Crown Court heard.
His collection included images of a boy aged just 3–5.
He admitted six offences of making indecent images of children, alongside distributing indecent images and possessing extreme pornography involving bestiality.
Police uncovered evidence that he distributed images via WhatsApp between 2019 and 2020. The material included Category A images — the most serious classification — as well as Category B and C images.
Other images dated back to 2009–10.
Recorder Taryn Turner said his offending went “significantly beyond simple possession”, warning that viewing and distributing the material sustained demand for abuse that causes children “profound and lasting harm”.
His sentence? Two years and eight months in prison, suspended.
He must comply with probation requirements, has been made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will remain on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
The children depicted were real victims of sexual abuse. Every image shared circulates their exploitation again, stripping them of privacy and control over the record of their abuse, yet Oglesby will not go straight to prison.
