one of the best parts of living in nyc is that you can go spend a lovely fall evening in central park. you can just do that – at Manhattan, NY

the great lie online centrists have managed to whip themselves up about is that trans people are demanding maximal policy changes and this is going to kill democrats everywhere instead of the far bleaker reality, that we are begging them to hold the line on what already exists

turek is not every democrat, which it is WHY it is so important to form an impassable wall against his idea to restrict trans healthcare so that he does not BECOME every democrat. there’s room to debate how feasible the pace of progress can be. there isn’t to go backwards.

You have to vote for the guy who’s gonna make everyone’s lives better otherwise a transphobe might get into office

Stop understating this. A trans Hyde Amendment is less like denouncing gay marriage in 2006 and more like denouncing antiretroviral therapy for HIV patients in 2006.

I've generally held to "vote blue no matter who," but I've concluded Turek cannot win. His stances are completely unacceptable, especially on healthcare. If he wins, other Democrats will follow suit because they'll think this nonsense is a secret sauce.

Was it really that hard to say something like this @turek4iowa

Adam Hamilton on transgender rights:
“I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself.”
“I’m gonna love the trans person as well as the straight person, male or female. We have to do better than picking on small groups. What’s happened is we’ve turned a group of people into a campaign issue because it polls well.”
Sidenote: for all the centrist hemming and hawing on here about how trans rights are *the* electoral drag, voters do not give a shit + slightly favor Dems on the issue. Like with UK Labour, the consultant class is deeply out of touch with what most swing voters care about.

This is the way: perform compassion, mess up some of the terminology. “We should treat transgender people the same way we treat straight people.” That’s how you sound like a regular person, not “who? me? Pro-trans! No! Never! Fuck em! We hates them!”

These people are not interested in strategically persuading the public to support trans people more than they do, they want to do endless snarky dunks on their closest major-party allies for a relative handful of likes on X.com , just absolute loser behavior

You can debate strategy until the sun comes up, but my read is that Josh Turek is just a genuine transphobe. The ad goes much farther than what would be necessary if he were acting only on strategy.
Many people here treat me as a maximalist, but I am only asking for "let me live a normal life (non-discrimination, health care access, etc.), and don't treat me w/contempt". That's a standard red state D position & you're playing dumb if you act like Turek's hand is forced here.

imagine if a blue state republican had an ad saying ‘I’m the gay rights candidate. that’s me, the lgbt rights candidate. I PROMISE to vote for gay marriage & trans rights’. would people who care strongly about that issue then vote for the republican? that’s how stupid this looks

AdImpact: Josh Turek releases new ad in which he opposes trans women competing in women’s sports
“No Iowan should face discrimination. As a Paralympian, I also know it's important to have rules.”
“It's why I oppose males competing in female sports ... I'm against taxpayers paying for sex changes, too.”

Hasan Piker on Barack Obama endorsing Angie Nixon:
"If Obama actually causes Angie Nixon to win, if Abdul and Angie Nixon both win, I'm buzzing my hair and I'm turning blond. I'm fucking Kyle Kulinski, dude, and by that I mean having SEX with @KyleKulinski. That's right. I'm having sex with Kyle." 😭
OK, this is where I draw the line. I've heard a lot about how 90% of Dems are great here—amazing, thank you. But I won't vote for candidates that want to pass new laws taking away my access to health care or other very basic things; no party can demand we do this to ourselves.
