We had a great lecture on LARS and its complex treatment strategy by Dr Özdal Ersoy @MemorialBahçelievlerHospital Pelvic floor and bowel health Unit🧬🔬✨ ➡️What is Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS)? 💡 After surgery to remove part of the rectum (commonly for rectal cancer), some patients experience a group of symptoms known as LARS. 🧻 Symptoms may include: 🔹 Urgency (needing to rush to the toilet) 🔹 Increased frequency of bowel movements 🔹 Incontinence (accidental leakage of stool or gas) 🔹 Fragmented stools 🔹 Difficulty emptying the bowel completely 🧠 Why does it happen? Surgery can disrupt the rectum’s function as a reservoir. Additionally, nerve damage or loss of the natural defecation reflex can alter bowel habits. 🌟 Who is at risk? Patients who have undergone: ✅ Low anterior resection ✅ Radiotherapy ✅ Total mesorectal excision (TME) ✅ Anastomosis close to the anal canal 🎯 Management options: ✅ Diet modification ✅ Pelvic floor rehabilitation ✅ Medications ✅ Transanal irrigation ✅ Sacral nerve stimulation (in selected cases) 🩺 Early recognition and multidisciplinary support can make a huge difference in quality of life.
