watching designers hype up these painfully average multi-page brand kits really shows how deep in the gutter the bar for design is right now.

Every UX designer walking into a cockpit: Clutter!
Every pilot walking into a cockpit: Clarity!
The word "clutter" is terribly overused in the UX/design field, commonly serving as a superficial critique of decoration while often ignoring the design's true context.

it’s crazy but access to capital right now is way easier than access to people who match your wavelength.

I like that a core strategy of the AI industry is trying to convince everyone that they hate being alive and doing anything. That your only desire as a human being is to put out product and make money and get likes on social media. But you shouldn't enjoy any actual activity.
“It’s not really enjoyable to make music now… it takes a lot of time, it takes a lot of practice, you have to get really good at an instrument or really good at a piece of production software. I think the majority of people don’t enjoy the majority of time they spend making music.” Founder of @suno_ai_ @MikeyShulman
Always interesting to hear someone with a completely opposite view to me.
hammer-nail problem: when your only tool is visual design, every problem looks like it can be solved with an aesthetic face lift.
we’ve reduced "problem-solving" to mean "make it pretty and usable" when real problems are far messier and more systemic.
Replying to @lindsayballant
For the record this is why I've disassociated from the design class. They view every problem as a "design challenge" and their solutions too often look like this—useless graphic design exercises made for themselves, for the purpose of creating Good Design that wins design awards

What's interesting here is that a computer did the fun, creative job of drawing Kermit in various scenarios, and then a human did the boring, labor-intensive job of creating shortcuts with custom thumbnails to open all of their favorite apps. teapawt.net/dlberes/status/1830719…

"design tools continue to fall behind CSS" was a recurring theme at @CSSDayConf
- typography features (so many!)
- scroll animation
- meaningful math tricks
- layout capabilities
- container queries / responsive capabilities
- anchor positioning
- :has() and presence awareness
- quantity queries
- scroll snap
and so much more…
it seems like design tools are competing against each other to be the best Photoshop variant. meanwhile, the web's features are pushing fast into a mega capable future and designers are blissfully unaware. (i'm aware this isn't all teams, but it's def the majority)
web designers, sit with your web developers
web developers, sit with your web designers
also, someone (i wish i could work on this) make a tool that unlocks these features for designers. help them wield these capabilities, they're super fun and very meaningful.
the delta is growing too fast between CSS and design tools, someone or something close this gap!!
