Bessent trying to talk up the "Economic war" against Iran, centered around threatening the other countries in the world with de-dollarfication if they do any business with the country.
For one, it violates sovereignty of these other nations, but that's not really the issue. The issue here is three-fold: For one, it'll just push 20% of Iran'soil onto the black market where its continued sale will be quietly ignored. Second, it puts yet another rung in the ladder in the BRICS climb towards the petroyuan and the weakening of the US dollar.
Third, notice how I said 20%? That's because China purchases 80% of their oil, and big Chinese banks are explicitly exempted from this.
Bessent is in a panic at this point. He's backed into a corner. It's ironic the guy that led the assault on the British sterling when the Bank of England wasn't able to defend it is now boxed into the same position BoE was placed in - with equally pathetic results.
Desperately buying treasuries to try and boost the bond market, threatening to tap the general account to increase the gambit, and now this nonsense. Nobody is buying, bro.

I deleted both my Instagram and Facebook accounts.
Then I realized something:
Many local businesses donβt even have websites anymore.
They rely entirely on centralized platforms that gatekeep their content.
If you canβt log in to Facebook or Instagram, you canβt even see basic information about them.
My goodnessβ¦ the internet is so broken I canβt even explain it.

2) If you pay people enough they will abandon their principles

After another condescending model and a condescending reply from the CISO of OpenAI, I have permanently and irrevocably deleted my OpenAI account.
For context, I was using GPT-2 back when they were still open source, training GPT-2 to unscramble sentences.
Then I was on their forums teaching people to finetune GPT-3. Building cognitive architectures before "agents" were a thing.
This company is rotten from the top, and they are not improving.
I am done. Enough is enough.

Such a relief to have Sam Altman's promise that he'd never facilitate mass surveillance. He has an incredible track record of keeping his promises, so we should all feel really good about this.

We would not do that, because it violates the constitution. Also, I cannot overstate how much the DoW has been extremely aligned on this point.
However, maybe this is the question you are really asking: what would we do if there were a constitutional amendment that made it legal?
Maybe I would quit my job.
I very deeply believe in the democratic process, and that our elected leaders have the power, and that we all have to uphold the constitution.
I am terrified of a world where AI companies act like they have more power than the government.
I would also be terrified of a world where our government decided mass domestic surveillance was ok. I don't know how I'd come to work every day if that were the state of the country/Constitution.

Sam Altman is such an incredible backstabber, liar and traitor.
While your competitor is taking a heroic and principled stand, you swoop in to make your deal. Imagine working for this guy - is there a greater shame?
This should lead to a mass exodus from OpenAI.
Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network.
In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome.
AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.
We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only.
We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements.
We remain committed to serve all of humanity as best we can. The world is a complicated, messy, and sometimes dangerous place.

sam, in 2022 you stole our money
we tried to get our money off your exchange, and you refused to give it
ultimately we had $76.8 million that you effectively stole from us
you did this to thousands of others too and later we learned you had used the money to make personal investments
stealing, misusing, misappropriating your clients money for your own personal benefit is the worst crime in finance
youβre a pathological liar and thief, you knew what you were doing, and you deserve prison just like you got
10 Myths About Me & FTX
1) Myth: FTX was insolvent / $8b vanished
Prosecutors to jurors: I had "more debts than assets"; "there's this giant, massive, unrepayable hole"
Debtors to my judge/Congress: my claim "FTX was solvent" is "false"; I "lost $8b of customer money"
Media to you: "the money is gone"
Truth: FTX was solvent & is repaying customers 119-143%
FTX could afford to repay in kind, until lawyers paid themselves $1b to:
- quickly dismantle the estate
- slowly repay customers
