this review of Interstellar (2014) by @lauren_wilford is one of the best things I’ve read in a while

Nike PR staff: “We asked him to put on the spikes and show us some tricks. The very first thing he showed us was that famous scene of hitting the crossbar multiple times in a row. All we could say was, ‘Ronnie. Thank you. The commercial shoot is already over.’
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
“Nike PR staff” quote is unverified viral anecdote. Nike confirmed 2005 ad used digital editing/off-camera ball kicks for rebounds (only 2 consecutive hits by Ronaldinho, not 4). Ball trajectories adjusted unnaturally. goal.com/en-us/news/was… skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/1863… dr.dk/sporten/fodbol…

>American airman asleep on a train in France while on vacation with his childhood friends
>Wakes up to the sound of screaming and breaking glass
>Sees a terrorist step into the aisle carrying an AK-47 and 300 rounds of ammo
>Doesn't look for an exit, doesn't hesitate
>Sprints 30 feet down the aisle straight at the barrel of the gun, completely unarmed
>The terrorist pulls the trigger; the rifle miraculously jams
>Tackles him, gets slashed in the neck and hand with a box cutter, almost losing his thumb
>Ignores the bleeding, chokes the attacker unconscious with his bare hands
>Credits God for the jammed rifle and his survival
>Saves everyone on board

It is sometimes difficult to put into words what genius is.
But you do feel it when you experience it.
This is Jacob Collier as he improvises with an orchestra performing with the world's first Audience Symphony Orchestra in San Francisco, a gathering of fans from all over North America, conducted by Suzie Collier. In the middle of the show, this happened - no rehearsal, no sheet music, no prior discussion.

my friend asked if i have any tips for talking to strangers out in public
(of course I do!!!)
tips:
- do it in places where people generally linger. this can be in line, at coffee shops, after a yoga class, etc. there needs to be an element of slowness so you can easily strike up a convo
- wouldn't recommend starting with 'hi' - that can be offputting and there isn't much to do that with that. you'll want an easier intro line
- my favorites intro lines are almost as though you're letting them into your inner monologue
like:
- "I can't decide between X or Y (on the menu)"
- "have any favorites that you order here? I want to try something new"
- *comment on a product they're holding or wearing*
- "wow that yoga class was so great today - I have to come again"
- after you say this, you can usually sense their appetite for connection. if they feel warm and friendly, you can keep it going - "have you been here before?"
- typically the conversation starts flowing from here!!
- sometimes people aren't in the mood to chat and that's no biggie - you still got a nice quick interaction of the day. sometimes the conversations will go on longer and it can lead to a really wonderful interaction!
- i'd encourage you to stay a *little* extra longer than you typically would. fight through the initial discomfort so that you can increase your appetite for this type of convo
- repeat this whole process a few times to increase comfort with this!
you'll start to realize that people are EXCITED to talk to you!
strangers aren't as scary as they seem!
and you'll start living a life thats more open and fun!

Christian writers have long talking about “thin places” where the boundary between heaven and earth collapses and the presence of God feels visceral.
A few years ago I met a guy from rural South Africa who said: “Where I’m from, the idea of not believing in God doesn’t even occur to people. Not everybody’s a Christian but everyone I know believes in a higher power. It’s obvious to us.”
Cities like London and New York are the opposite. They’re thick places, which is one reason why they’re centers of unbelief. It’s hard to relate to a creator when everything around you is man-made and the lights blind you to the majesty of the infinite cosmos.
These major cities shield you from the transcendent in the same way those heavy lead jackets at the dentist’s office block radiation.
Thin places tend to be quiet. But cities are physically (and spiritually) loud, which is why, when you’re in them, you can go weeks at a time without pausing to think about God.

forms of unconditional love that exist in direct reality, free of charge:
- the air you breathe
- the new colors invented with each sunrise and sunset
- the kiss of the wind on your face
- trees, taking your used-up air and restoring it
- the sun's warmth
- the moon's gravity

This year I celebrated my 37th birthday. I feel proud to look at the song lyrics and know that NONE of them are true anymore. I've grown into a completely new man...one that i'm proud of. check this out...

Great way to gain perspective is to look up random stats for the average person. Stuff like how much the general population has in their bank account. How much debt they're in. Do it for your country, then globally
Guarantee you'll be shocked. If you're even slightly ambitious, you'll already go into the search with low expectations. Whatever you think the numbers will be, it'll somehow spit out something even lower
This is all to say, you have to chill the fuck out. Don't let the stats justify inaction, but recognize how pointless your anxiety is. You're way closer to the global top 1% than you are to the middle. Even being in the middle itself is a privilege when you take into account that the world isn't just this small corner of Twitter
Makes no sense to exist in a perpetually low vibration, to attack your mind with thoughts of inadequacy just because you're not living some subjective idea of the 0.001%. You're so incredibly lucky to be in the exact position you're in right now. Legitimately unreal how blessed you are
Continue to strive because you can, and you get to, not because you're a loser. Recognize that even having a phone and wifi means you've already won. You wouldn't even have the mental luxury to read this if it weren't true. Appreciate being alive. Do all things from a place of gratitude. And just keep winning
Felt this one in my bones.
Successful relationships are based on three things:
1. Mutual Attraction
2. Mutual Trust
3. Mutual Respect
Once you want the partner to be someone they aren't, you've lost at least one of the three

it’s actually amazing how many minds can be liberated by one clear-thinking person being willing to say what they truly see in public, at scale
