In Uganda, unsafe abortion continues to be a serious public health concern, leaving women and girls at risk of severe bleeding, infection, injury, disability and death. Uganda’s health-sector guidelines have previously estimated hundreds of thousands of unsafe abortions annually, with a significant number resulting in severe complications.
Behind every statistic is a woman or girl - a daughter, mother, sister, friend or member of a community - whose life should not have been lost because she could not access timely, safe and appropriate reproductive healthcare.
Unsafe abortion is preventable. The @WHO notes that deaths and severe complications can be prevented through comprehensive sexuality education, access to effective contraception, safe abortion care where legally available, and timely treatment of complications.
Today, we remember the lives lost.
We stand with those living with complications.
And we call for a health system where no woman or girl is pushed into an unsafe abortion because of lack of information, services, affordability, stigma or fear.
Access to safe and legal abortion is not only a matter of healthcare - it is a matter of dignity, bodily autonomy, equality and the right to life.
The question is not whether unsafe abortion costs lives. It does.
The question is how many more lives must be lost before we act?

#Abortion is not completely illegal in Uganda!
The law permits it when it is necessary to save the mother’s life and requires it to be performed by a qualified health professional.
This week, we unpack the Constitution&Penal Code to clarify what the law really says on abortion
Unsafe abortion is still one of the major causes of maternal mortality in Uganda.
On #InternationalSafeAbortionDay, we call for access to safe and legal abortion care in Uganda.
No one should lose their life as a result of seeking essential healthcare services

Low and Middle-Income countries continue to face growing challenges in ensuring sustainable access to medicines and other essential health products.
Pressures on global supply chain, recent health crises, the rising cost of innovative treatments, and budget constraints affecting health systems and insurance coverage all highlight the need to strengthen national capacities to guarantee equitable, continuous, and affordable access to health products.
CEHURD, in partnership with @KELINKenya and @ITPCglobal is hosting a national dialogue platform bringing together stakeholders involved in intellectual property, innovation, local production, and #AccessToMedicines. This national symposium on #IntellectualProperty, Pharmaceutical Innovation, and Access to Medicines in Uganda aims to foster a collective, constructive, and multi-stakeholder reflection on the levers that can strengthen sustainable access to health products in the Ugandan context.
