JUST IN: Serbia’s longtime leader Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary election, losing to a student-led opposition movement after two years of protests against his government. The stunning result ends 14 years of dominance by Vucic and his right-wing party. Backed by Vladimir Putin, Vucic had accused the student movement of being a foreign-backed attempt to oust him. The opposition is projected to win 135–140 of Parliament’s 250 seats, compared with about 105 for Vucic’s party.

Reality is finally crashing down on the Kremlin: Trump can't deliver the easy capitulation putin was banking on. In a telling moment of backdoor realisation, putin’s top aide, Yuri Ushakov, just exposed Moscow's deep desperation. He admits that dealing strictly with Trump and his real estate “diplomats”, isn't working because Trump can't just bully Kyiv into submission. Instead, Russia is finally forced to accept a hard truth: they have to deal with a united Europe that stands firmly behind Ukraine. Desperate for progress, Moscow now wants Europe at the table—proving once and for all that Trump's 'magic wand' has completely failed. Pavel Zarubin: “Is such an option possible, if Zelensky continues to behave insolently toward the American administration, that the American administration will simply dictate and force him to make the decisions that the American administration considers correct?” Yuri Ushakov: “Well, you understand, even earlier there was an impression after Anchorage, too, that the American administration could dictate something like that and force Kyiv to fulfill it. But so far this hasn't quite worked out, because it's not enough to talk only with Kyiv; one needs to talk with the whole of Europe, which fully supports Kyiv, and perhaps Europe's position here is of a key character.”

I have just spoken by phone with the leaders of the Students' List @studentblokade, who won the elections in Serbia, to congratulate them on their victory. I assured them of Hungary’s support. I was delighted to hear how much strength our victory in April had given them during this difficult struggle.

German parliamentarian Max Krah of the "Alternative für Deutschland" party, which is far-right and pro-Putin (to put it mildly) on the Serbian election: "Not a good day. After Hungary, we have lost Serbia as well."
Kein guter Tag. Nach Ungarn haben wir auch Serbien verloren. Es zeigt sich, dass sich die Rechte neu aufstellen muss. Das bisherige Konzept reicht nicht, um zu überzeugen.

Fantastic news. Nationalism, corruption, and flirting with Moscow have been sidelined, mostly by Serbian youth. They know that their future will be bleak if it doesn’t lie with Europe. Vučić’s defeat paves the way for hope—but the road ahead will be steep. bbc.com/news/articles/cw5yn3…

My reporting on the student movement in Serbia last summer. They kept at it, amazingly, for two years. And they won. snyder.substack.com/p/youth-…

In November 1941 the richest man in America drove his twenty-three-year-old daughter to a hospital in Washington without telling her mother, had two surgeons drill holes in her skull and cut into the front of her brain while she sang God Bless America to them, and when the singing stopped she had a mental age of two and the family did not speak her name for twenty years. Rosemary Kennedy was the third child and the first girl, and she was slow. A nurse at the birth had held Rose Kennedy's legs together for two hours while they waited for the doctor, and the baby had been starved of air. She learned to read and write, but late, and in a family where the boys were being bred for the presidency and the girls for the right marriage, she was the one who could not keep up, the one who had to be coached and watched and given the simpler part in the photograph. She was also, by every account, the prettiest of them, and when the family went to London in 1938 she was presented at court in a white dress and curtsied to the King without a mistake. Then she was twenty-one, and the trouble started. Moods. Rages. Slipping out of the convent school at night and coming back in the morning and not saying where. The nuns said she might be meeting men. For Joseph Kennedy, who was managing his sons towards the White House and could not have a daughter who might get pregnant or get talked about, that was the end of it. He had read about a new operation. Walter Freeman had promised the newspapers it calmed the agitated, and Joe Kennedy had never in his life been told that a thing he could pay for would not work. Rosemary was given a mild sedative and kept awake. Freeman and his surgeon, James Watts, opened the skull on both sides and Watts pushed a blade into the frontal lobes and swept, while Freeman asked her to recite the Lord's Prayer and sing, and count backwards, so they would know how far to go. They went until she was incoherent. Then they stopped. She came out of it unable to walk or speak. Years of therapy got her a few words and a limp. Joe moved her to a private hospital in New York and then to a convent school in Wisconsin, told the family she was teaching the retarded in the Midwest, and never went to see her. Rose, her mother, was not told what had been done until long after, and did not visit for twenty years. The brothers and sisters, including the one who became President, were told she was away. When Joe had his stroke in 1961 and could no longer manage the story, Eunice went to Wisconsin and found a woman of forty-three who did not know her, and came home and started the Special Olympics. Rosemary lived to eighty-six, in the convent, and died in 2005 with her surviving sisters at the bed. The brother who became President had signed the first federal mental health law in 1963, and the family has said she was the reason. Freeman kept operating for another twenty-six years. His notes on Rosemary have never been released. That is what the expert's confidence looks like when it meets a powerful man with an inconvenient child. The science was published. The father was certain. The daughter sang to the surgeon until she could not. Every institution that has ever decided it knows what is wrong with you and how to tidy it has the same two ingredients in the room, and the person on the table is still the only one who pays.

🇷🇸 One of the strangest images of SERBIA'S ELECTION NIGHT came after Vučić conceded Riot police who had been stationed around key government buildings began pulling out of central Belgrade as crowds celebrated the student-led opposition victory. Police trucks LEAVING while people cheered and waved them off. GOOSEBUMPS! For months, those streets had looked like a government preparing for confrontation. Then the result landed, and the barricades started disappearing. Writer: Oliver

Given results in Serbia and Brazil today, there’s lots of talk here of an anti-populism backlash but I’d be careful. Elections these days are so often decided by small margins and tend to swing against incumbents. France might offer a different lesson, as has Germany in the East. It doesn’t mean those are permanent turns right - or today’s results are permanent turns left - because if new leaders fail to address public frustrations and concerns, the pendulum swings back. It strikes me that we are in a period of massive and disorienting disruptions and voters are searching for solutions. They are voting based on whether new leaders deliver.

He is in a whole lot of trouble, and not just in the US.
I still think that Musk has no concept of how things could change on Capitol Hill - and even at the Pentagon - after the midterms.

This is Novi Sad, the site of the horrific awning collapse that killed 16 people, sparking the massive student-led protests that led to Vučić's demise two years later. Seeing the entire place bounce like this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

This was Minsk six years ago today. Hundreds of thousands of Belarusians took to the streets for freedom on October 25, 2020. I know how hard these years have been. But we have not given up on our country. I will keep working for the day we can all live there without fear.
