when we use the word queer in english, it is an intervention intended to shape the mind of the english-speaking reader since language is a tool of meaning-making; when we speak of “queer”-coding in asian media, we intervene in english-speaking political & intellectual life

It also pressures us into having narratives where men cannot be soft, gentle and loving with each other without it being interpreted as a "bait". It turns the act of shipping, which is an exercize of imagination that extrapolates canon, into an act of investigation.

Another food for thought : Are so many people offended by bromance shows because they have internalised the idea that male friendships are only allowed to manifest within certain boundaries? That there is an acceptable degree of affection, intimacy and emotional vulnerability between two men, and anything that goes beyond it must automatically be labelled as either “gay” or “queerbaiting”?
Isn’t this, in itself, a reflection of the toxic masculinity perpetuated by a patriarchal society? One that has conditioned people to associate emotional intimacy, physical affection and genuine tenderness between men with homosexuality, as though these qualities somehow undermine their masculinity?
I’m not a man, so I can’t speak from a male perspective. However, as a woman who has a platonic soulmate, I can tell you that the affection, closeness and behaviours portrayed in these bromance shows are very much part of my own platonic friendships.
Why are we so quick to question the nature of a friendship simply because it doesn’t conform to the narrow boundaries society has imposed on it? And, more importantly, why are we so uncomfortable with the idea that two men can love, cherish and be deeply affectionate towards each other without that affection having to be romantic or sexual?

I wish they put more effort into making it believable for it to be actually impactful (to respect mingming acting her ass off atleast) like they should have pretended Tokyo is so affected by yi's death and feels hopeless she plans a double sucide first killing blue then herself

i think that’s why so many of us connect to it, queer people do live with grief, loss of family especially

Like do you see tgl as a serious legitimate form of media or not? Or it's just silly little show with zero value in it? Do you want ppl to take tgl seriously or not? I personally treat tgl just like any other msinstream media I actually see it as a serious business

i literally just need realism and good writing. if it has that i can handle a death. everyone keeps saying thai gl is the land of happy endings and most of them are not happy endings to me, a party and a dress does not a happy ending make.

i would've prefer if the scene wasn't that detailed and the show gave them more privacy. the imagery innuendos was actually interesting and they should've leave it at that! but alas, it's a thai gl so. it is ofcourse in context with everything their experiencing, but yaknow.

people on here be spamming ‘depiction isn’t endorsement’ as an excuse to be blindly uncritical about the media they like

fascinating how people have been claiming they are being “queerbaited” (western corporate framework) by this queer-coded asian tv show precisely because they were able to engage in a queer reading of the material (as intended!) and only now are they having their aha moments
Director Park aware that some viewers even interpreted #FourHandsTwoSonatas through a “Boys’ Love” (BL) lens. and his respond to this was ㅡ “It is an indescribable happiness and a source of gratitude for all our production team members that viewers are enjoying the drama through their own diverse perspectives. I am simply thankful that they have filled the spaces between the writer’s text and the visualized scenes with such rich interpretations.”
