From Musongati Nickel to a $ 1.4B Grid: Burundi's US pivot US-Burundi deals in 2026 centre on critical minerals and enabling infrastructure, reflecting Washington’s push to diversify supply chains away from heavy Chinese dominance in nickel and rare earths. 1. Minerals Deals - March 10, 2026: Lifezone Metals (NYSE: LZM) signed a 14-month exclusivity agreement with Burundi for the Musongati nickel laterite project (part of the East African Nickel Belt; historical estimates exceed 140 million tonnes, with copper, cobalt, and other by-product potential). The signing occurred at the US State Department. At the same event, KoBold Metals (AI-driven explorer backed by Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos) signed an MOU to digitize Burundi’s geological data and make it more accessible. - June 25, 2026: Burundi’s Minister Hassan Kibeya signed an MoU with US-based Critical Outcomes Group (COG) for investment and development of rare earth elements projects. Burundi holds high-grade deposits (notably Gakara NdPr, previously operated by Rainbow Rare Earths but stalled since 2021 amid renegotiations). The deal aims at exploration, job creation, and positioning Burundi as a supplier for EV magnets, renewables, and defence applications. 2. Infrastructure Deal - October 2026: Anzana Electric Group (via subsidiary Weza Power) signed a $1.4 billion, 25-year public-private partnership with the Government of Burundi—the largest investment in the country’s history. It targets expanding and modernizing electricity distribution (roughly 52,000 km of lines, over 1.2 million new connections), lifting electrification from ~12% toward 50–70% and reaching an estimated 8 million people. The project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and is explicitly framed as unlocking further US private investment, including in mining and agro-processing. Financing is blended (private capital plus concessional support involving the US DFC, World Bank institutions, and others). Anzana has prior involvement in Burundi energy and regional projects such as Ruzizi III hydropower. 3. Geopolitical Dimensions These agreements form part of broader US efforts (including the FORGE initiative and Great Lakes engagement) to secure diversified sources of nickel (batteries, alloys, defence) and rare earths (permanent magnets for EVs, wind turbines, electronics, and defence). Reliable power is a practical precondition for large-scale mining and processing. The deals shift incentives toward greater stability in Burundi: profitable, long-term extraction and supply-chain control favour predictability, potentially reducing the utility of prolonged weakness or division that previously served as a buffer zone amid eastern DRC conflict dynamics. Burundi has pursued greater state participation and better terms, including earlier licence suspensions and renegotiations. Regional linkages (minerals cooperation across the Great Lakes, cross-border power) reinforce the economic-statecraft angle. Outcomes will depend on implementation, contract transparency, local-content provisions, security conditions, and how Burundi balances sovereignty with foreign investment. The sequence—from minerals exploration MOUs to major grid investment—illustrates growing US commercial and strategic engagement in the country. #Burundi #criticalminerals #USBurundi #Nickel #RereEarths @LifezoneMetals @KoBold_Metals @NtareHouse @GeneralNeva
American company Anzana Electric has signed a $1.4 billion public-private partnership with the Government of Burundi to transform the country's electricity grid, the largest investment in Burundi's history. Over the next several years, the agreement will raise the electrification rate from 12 percent to 70 percent, bringing reliable power to millions of Burundians for the first time. A modern grid will open the door to a new wave of U.S. private-sector investment and strengthen U.S. supply chains, including in mining and agro-processing. Building it will put thousands of Burundians to work, proving what partnership with American business can deliver for both our countries.
