Our final keynote speaker is Andrea Liu, who presented her work on tunable matter, essentially defined as the ability to intervene in a collective system to understand its functioning mechanically, with applications ranging from material science to neuroscience. #CCS2026

Beyond explaining and predicting, a key purpose of theoretical research is to sharpen the questions that we're asking in the first place (and to develop methods to do all of these things better).

Using a simple model as an example, Réka Albert delivered a magnificent keynote lecture on how our representations of complex biological systems need to recapitulate real biological observations found in the scientific literature. #CCS2026

I’m happy to share my first published paper, now in the Journal of Theoretical Biology! Thanks to my incredible co-authors: my advisor @cgershen and Stu Kauffman. “Life Finds a Way” uses a simple network model to explore how cooperative structures can emerge even when competition and harmful interactions are widespread. The idea is that organisms create opportunities for one another, and as a community grows, those connections can give rise to new levels of organization. I’m excited to share this as a step toward understanding how life tinkers together communities, and how those communities make more life possible. sciencedirect.com/science/ar… #networkscience #ComplexSystems #theoreticalbiology #SystemsBiology #emergence
