This may be the funniest thing @RoyCooperNC has ever said: “Cooper on his concerns about running for Senate: “I'll have to admit that I did look up at all of those Senate committee chairs in Washington, and I was thinking I might be a little young for this.” #ncpol

Excited to share (and be back on Twitter for) this new gig! Reporting for duty to make life difficult for Republicans who stand in the way of the very obvious demand for AI regulation and help Democrats get this thing right.

At the start of his term, @ossoff told me he spent several hours each week cold-calling Georgians to see what he needed to know. Five years later, I cold called Georgians to see if they had heard from him. They had. “I was flabbergasted.” ajc.com/politics/2026/09/opi…

I'm going to become the joker with all of these conservatives discrediting liberal arguments about AI by spookily whispering that money might be involved.
The birth of the Tech Right involved the realization, in the 2020s, that conservative people in tech should use their money to do stuff in politics. The All In podcast hosts threw fundraisers for the president!
I don't know what the principle is at stake here other than "when conservative money seems like it'll get its way, we're a movement; but when liberal money seems like it'll get its way, it's a conspiracy." In 2024, when (per the Washington Post) about 80% of federal campaign spending by the 100 wealthiest Americans went to Republicans, you didn't hear a lot from the Tech Right back then about the danger of money in politics. But now that Trump is polling below the Mendoza Line and several upcoming IPOs will unlock billions of dollars of cash among Chamath's political enemies, these guys are suddenly Woodward and Bernstein, exposing the evils of rich ppl using their money to do stuff in politics.
Chamath on Obama’s AI Warning: Follow the Money
President Obama last week:
“If we are thinking about AI just in terms of how do we cure cancer or get better energy, you can do that without having agentic AI.
That's a misalignment between what our society needs and the commercial imperatives that these companies are facing.”
@Chamath:
“This is a very important moment for a very simple reason, which is we, as in the world, are about to endow three, four, five, six companies with about $10T of wealth.
And what Obama knows very well is that most of those companies are overwhelmingly left-leaning. And what he also knows is that there is a huge portion of that money that will then get put into philanthropic and charitable causes that then he, and the people around him, will be beneficiaries of.
That is the truth. We already know this because we know that some of these frontier corporations actually ask you to stand up DAFs and have a portion of your stock that you're willing to pledge.
So this money is going to go to things other than consumption or savings. And so it's going to go into PACs, it's going to go into political movements, and (Democrats) stand to disproportionately benefit.
So this has nothing to do with prosperity. This is a very simple political calculus.
If you freeze frame the economy the way it is today, a handful of organizations that will disproportionately be able to affect the Democrats will win. They will capture the lion's share of the economic gains, and then they will help the Democrats win power.
That's all this is.”
Glad to see the President of the United States laser focused on the biggest challenges posed by this revolutionary technology.
Reassuring.
President Trump announced that he is changing the name of Artificial Intelligence to Super Intelligence. I transcribed this live from his address to the UN.
'The United States also rejects any scheme for globalist control of Artificial Intelligence, being spoken of so much now. Here and after officially called Super Intelligence. Changing the name. The use of 'Artificial' makes it sound fake. It makes intelligence sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing, the opposite of what they report. From this day forward, all United States documents, and hopefully the world's, will be changed to use the much more accurate term 'Super' as opposed to 'Artificial.' So it’s Super Intelligence.'

Listen to this guy. It’s about control. Humans must be in control.
Obama on recursive self improvement and the risks associated with it. When he talks about the urgency for us all to have a say in how this technology evolves and how it is overseen, this is part of the reason why:
“The models are going to get smarter and smarter and better and better at a much faster pace, at an exponential pace.
What are the risks of that? There’s the big science fiction risk, wow, these models get smarter than us, and they decide humans are fine, but not necessary. They start setting their own goals, and the killer robots kill us, or we bow down to them.
I do not want to exaggerate that particular risk, but I will say there is a non-zero risk of non-zero chance of that happening, but that’s not actually the risk that I’m most concerned about, although it’s the risk that gets most attention.
And the reason that’s a risk is not because the computer models are conscious, necessarily. It doesn’t mean that they are necessarily feel malice towards humans. It’s just that if they start setting their own agendas, you may get a misalignment between what they want to do and what we want them to do, and that gap can be dangerous. That’s problem number one.
The more serious problem is these models are getting powerful enough that if they get in the hands of bad humans, they can do bad things. They can be weaponized in certain ways. They can do a lot of mischief.”

Congress should be on an emergency footing in the coming week. We have to move at the pace of the threat, not our own habits and rhythms . People are depending on us to take swift bipartisan action that meaningfully reduces AI risk.

as usual, @SarahEMcBride is right in the policy, smart on the politics, and perfect on messaging.
This is literally an argument against representative government itself. He's arguing for an autocracy of elites rather than a republic where a legislative body will inevitably have a range of backgrounds and expertise as they craft overarching policy.
Beyond that, its not like members of Congress are food inspectors, FDA scientists, or doing enforcement at the SEC. This is just the dumbest possible excuse to not do anything as a Congress.
Do your job as a legislator or get out.

The people actually building AI - not the ones profiting from its hype - are the people most worried it could kill us all.
The need for strong federal guardrails is urgent (as is the need for a new Congress willing to pass them).
Replying to @hilbertspaess
The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.
This is such important work. Thrilled for this launch.
