After the Ottoman Empire's defeat in World War I, the Allied powers, including Britain and France, occupied your capital, Istanbul, and forced the Ottoman government to sign a humiliating treaty that would have carved Anatolia into pieces. Had Mustafa Kemal Atatürk not fought and won the Turkish War of Independence, overturning those arrangements, whether a country called "Türkiye" would even exist on today's map would be an open question. Let's go back a little further. In 1875, the Ottoman Empire defaulted on its debts. In 1881, European creditors established the Ottoman Public Debt Administration, taking direct control of roughly a quarter of the empire's government revenues. Imagine that. The mighty Ottoman sultans eventually found themselves unable to control their own country's purse strings, with European creditors holding the keys. Your finances were controlled by foreign powers, European states enjoyed extraterritorial privileges, and even your capital ended up under foreign military occupation. Is this the glorious history of "never being controlled by Europe" that you're so proud of? So, apparently, as long as foreign powers didn't officially rename your country a "colony," being slapped around, financially dominated, and militarily occupied somehow doesn't count as colonial subjugation? Second, you actually use China's history of foreign invasion to give yourself a sense of superiority? China has thousands of years of civilization behind it. We experienced the power of the Qin and Han dynasties, the prosperity of the Sui and Tang dynasties, as well as periods of decline and foreign invasion. Dynasties rose and fell, but Chinese civilization has endured to this day. When Chinese people meet their ancestors in the afterlife, they can proudly say: "We learned from our humiliation and rose again. We have returned to the ranks of the world's leading powers. Hong Kong and Macao have returned to China, and we are one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council." And what about the Ottoman Empire? From its rise in the late 13th century to the abolition of the sultanate in 1922, it lasted just over six centuries. Your empire once stretched across Europe, Asia, and Africa, only to end up as a piece of meat on the chopping block of the great powers, losing roughly 80% of its former territory. When you Turks meet your Ottoman ancestors in the afterlife, what exactly are you planning to report? That you've spent decades desperately trying to get into the European Union, only to be repeatedly rejected and humiliated by the Europeans? Or perhaps you'll proudly announce that, in your desperate search for historical significance, you've invented 16 completely unrelated "ancestral daddies", claiming them as your own just to inflate your imaginary family glory? Third, let's examine your pitiful understanding of history. You lump together Macao, Hong Kong, and the foreign concessions in Shanghai, then conclude that "China was colonized by Europe for hundreds of years." Yet you apparently cannot even distinguish between a colony, a foreign concession, and a semi-colonial state. By your own logic, since the Ottoman Empire had its finances controlled by European powers, lost territory, and saw its capital occupied by foreign armies, wouldn't that mean the Europeans had already colonized you so thoroughly that they practically stripped you down to your underwear? Chinese people have never denied the humiliations of our modern history, because we understand that only by confronting past failures can we avoid repeating them. What's truly laughable is watching a half-educated fool who barely understands their own country's triumphs and tragedies desperately seek psychological comfort by mocking the historical suffering of others on the internet. China's century of humiliation has become a warning that drives us forward. Meanwhile, you still seem trapped in imperial fantasies from six centuries ago, unwilling to wake up. You go around desperately adopting imaginary ancestors, even fantasizing that the Great Wall of China, thousands of miles away, was somehow built specifically because of you. You can stop fantasizing about restoring the glory of the Ottoman Empire. Judging by your current situation and the level of historical understanding displayed by people like you, another partition of Türkiye by multiple foreign powers may be only a matter of time.
