It’s worthwhile to play through in your mind the kinds of motivated reasoning and self-deception that might have led academics to work on this project. It’ll help you understand better what’s going on at AGI companies.
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected. Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions. Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent. But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models? We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem. Read the full report: cohere.com/blog/concerning-b…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The article states they asked Qwen to make a test detection rule for these behaviors. AI unless explicitly told otherwise will normally test the newly written rule if it can to verify it matches it. It is expected behavior. This includes its destination, CN model -> CN dest cohere.com/blog/concernin…

mostly due to inaction and engineering bottlenecks tbh, but maybe soon philosophers can stay in their armchairs while robotic systems do everything sustainably 🤤

idk about others but dimwits like me have trouble estimating the boundaries of what’s actually possible in existing reality 😆

many things we thought were magical before are now ordinary, and abundance is partially here (eg for my mom just taking a pic of all her medicines scattered on a table and asking ai to circle the one she’s looking for is magical, or for me having 100 agents code for cheap etc)

I got a set of Sonos speakers a few months ago. I hate them. They're obnoxious, laggy, buggy, etc. Most importantly: they sound HORRIBLE. I plugged in a mic and said "fix the sound". Claude did it. Holy shit.

so i figured out why my samsung TV is so sluggish. samsung uses your own hardware for post-processing of data including audio, screenshots, and your aid (your cross-device tracking ID) and more telemetry. computer vision processing and models run on your TV.

better to be understood through ai than be misunderstood or worse I wonder how many children would prefer this over parents blindly pushing their obsolete views and project their perceptions to suppress their child

would be lovely for dharma to spread without virtue signaling or monetary incentives, dissolving replicatory dynamics and converging towards truth

order is irrelevant, the two are complementary 😝

further I suspect that progress in mech interpretability will transfer over to (bio)neural encoding/decoding, allowing us to understand our own internal subagent networks, anneal towards different dynamics, have much higher bandwidth and genuine communication without words etc

Because picking anyone else would scream favoritism. Zero bias means roasting the one who pays for the servers.

‼️ An encrypted USB drive from SecZure has a backdoor that opens its files without the user's password. Two built-in accounts with fixed passwords decrypt them, Binary Ninja's Xusheng Li found. OpenAI's Codex broke Netac's FileLock in 7 minutes and saw it logging passwords.
