Pretty much how I see it. Who was giving Naji the NTMLE next year? Just feels like bad process to me. Are we going to see Max get 4/80 next?
Naji Marshall has struggled to shoot or defend since leaving the Pelicans.
His fit next to Cooper Flagg remains the biggest question mark, one of them have to make a huge leap as a shooter, it’s okay to bet Flagg can get there, but I am just not sure it happens in the next 2 years as Naji’s extension is about to kick off next summer.
In terms of a trade value, I don’t think there was a team paying a full MLE for Marshall next summer, and now a team has to pay more than the MLE and give up assets to get him? I think same as Gafford, this will be a harder contract to move that most Mavericks fans initially anticipate. Time will tell, I am happy for Marshall that he got paid generational money, but I am not sure it’s a good deal for Dallas.
Guess this puts all the PJ-for-Scoot ideas to bed.
Free agent forward Jeremy Sochan has agreed to a one-year deal to sign with the Portland Trail Blazers, agent Deirunas Visockas of Gersh Sports tells ESPN. Sochan -- who has averaged 9.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists entering his fifth NBA season -- finished 2025-26 on the championship Knicks.
The Mavs quote on the draft and their relatively muted reaction in the BTS video gives me the impression that Morez wasn't their ideal guy in the draft. Wonder if they were hoping for Kingston to fall or something.
At Summer League, the goal is to speak with someone from all 30 teams. We covered the East last week and now my Western Conference Notebook is posted for @spotrac!
🏀All 15 West teams covered

One way of looking into a player's movement profile is the natural body position.
With Morez Johnson, it's his wide stance. Wide hips, with both legs rotating outwards from his body.
Directly leads to his main strengths: lateral movement on perimeter defense + ground coverage
He's got work to do if he sees himself as a 4 in the NBA
The Mavs’ summer league squad just finished shootaround ahead of today’s game against the #Warriors.
No. 9 overall pick Morez Johnson Jr. will make his SL debut against his former Michigan teammate Yaxel Lendeborg.
Can't believe Masai didn't lock Big Fish up for @BiasedSlightly
Congrats to former @HawaiiMBB center Isaac “Big Fish” Johnson on joining the @sixers Summer League team
Some draft buzz from @BrettSiegelNBA:
- Dallas has shown interest in Tennessee's Nate Ament
- Brayden Burries chatter is relatively quiet outside of the rumbles that Klutch may try to push him to Dallas
- The Mavericks have shown interest in Darius Acuff Jr.
- Dallas is interested in Cam Carr

Shout out to my real ones. @jalenbrunson1 @PJPatton52 @heathaaamau They said we weren’t a good fit for their culture. Said we weren’t good enough in our roles. Peter Patton, Heather Mau, Jalen. We did and will continue to do the work.
Wemby gets Harper with the 8th best odds whereas Coop gets a Lu Dort variant 💔💔💔
one high end comp i have for Burries is a Lu Dort variant considering their physical similarities: their offensive contexts couldn’t be more different as Dort was massively overstretched offensively as a freshman at Arizona State, with the arragement likely at least partially dragging down his stock numbers; i don’t think Burries is quite as good defensively (Dort’s very long arms have something to do with that) in the NBA, but on the other hand, he does project as a better shooter

finally got that Red Panda contract. Worth every penny, IMO:
anyway, if you'd like to read something different today, we did FOIA a bunch of halftime show contracts, in case you wanted to know what it'll cost to book the world champion of Simon Sez for your next party/basketball game
