No, I didn’t suggest that. Major went to the 5 year limit and won, well judged, John, but : D Home (64) lost, as did Callaghan (97) and Brown (10). Cameron too (15), come to think of it

No, we have a 5 year election cycle. You’re meant to be a political commentator. The fact that PMs often go to the electorate after 4 years doesn’t mean it isn’t, by definition, an early election. By your logic, Major in 92, breached electoral law.

That’s not your smartest post, Jerry
We did briefly toy with having a fixed election cycle but Labour & Conservatives agreed that putting country before party was a bad idea and they preferred the option to have elections to suit themselves.

Valid point though I disagree about 2027. But that’s ok. Best wishes

Burnham may well call an election sometime next year but no way will he go for 10 December this year. Nothing is more guaranteed to instantly destroy Labour's current lead than forcing voters to go the polls in an unnecessary pre Christmas election.

Fair point, but I always try to answer real questions as distinct from populist claptrap, often vicious, often straight from trolls

It’s an effective way of putting someone down, I’ll grant you that. It’s also a great way to duck questions that - however daft - are often very real for the questioner.

A great leader, but way past his Sell By date . It was not a successful premiership despite Butler doing most of the hard work
Today in 1951 Winston Churchill re-elected British Prime Minister at the age of 76. A true and great leader along with Margaret Thatcher.

I am no conspiracy theorist, but there is no way that Labour are on 30% in the polls and 6% in front of Reform. It is impossible that there are that many uneducated people out there. My theory is that Reform voters have been telling pollsters that they would vote Labour. This would then make it look like Labour had a huge lead. Burnham would then call an election because he is desperate to have his own mandate and then we could get rid of him. Does anyone buy my idea?

A defeat for Putin protégée in Serbia . Does that count as a defeat for Trump too? In contrast to Brazil’s Lulu (80)the student led govt in Belgrade is scarily young. Good luck, new generation. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw5y…

No, if you check you’ll find four year cycle in UK elections. PMs try to avoid to be cornered by events beyond their control when 5 year rule beckons

May 2028 is still an early election

It’s not as if black players know anything about football, is it? That’s why the Premiership and the England team are all white. In your dreams, pal

Not surprised. They did it with Question of Sport. And it died. Dr Who is another that tanked. And Homes Under the Hammer, too. The latter is down from peak viewing figures.

Reality is finally crashing down on the Kremlin: Trump can't deliver the easy capitulation putin was banking on. In a telling moment of backdoor realisation, putin’s top aide, Yuri Ushakov, just exposed Moscow's deep desperation. He admits that dealing strictly with Trump and his real estate “diplomats”, isn't working because Trump can't just bully Kyiv into submission. Instead, Russia is finally forced to accept a hard truth: they have to deal with a united Europe that stands firmly behind Ukraine. Desperate for progress, Moscow now wants Europe at the table—proving once and for all that Trump's 'magic wand' has completely failed. Pavel Zarubin: “Is such an option possible, if Zelensky continues to behave insolently toward the American administration, that the American administration will simply dictate and force him to make the decisions that the American administration considers correct?” Yuri Ushakov: “Well, you understand, even earlier there was an impression after Anchorage, too, that the American administration could dictate something like that and force Kyiv to fulfill it. But so far this hasn't quite worked out, because it's not enough to talk only with Kyiv; one needs to talk with the whole of Europe, which fully supports Kyiv, and perhaps Europe's position here is of a key character.”

It wouldn’t be a Trump-backed candidate if he didn’t demand a new contest. Good luck, Brazil, but it’s never a good sign to elect an 80 year old. We’re past it at that age theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

No early election, Andre. I suspect you know that
Well, if PM Burnham is thinking of a snap election, this poll is unlikely to discourage him!!

Does anyone know if June slater is sincere in what she writes here - a long tale of woe, poor soul. Or is she another grifter? Forgive me for asking, June. But the reason Reform gets so much media grief is because it attracts so many dodgy types - a bit like Trump really
Understanding the position of Reform UK It's a very small team, unlike other parties. They're under enormous pressure. Last month they got more emails than The Tory party. The Tories have 157 staff, Labour have over 300. Reform has less than 20 full time, some are volunteers . They've had several by-elections, costly and time consuming legal battles, including the very important one that challenged the government who attempted to cancel the council elections. Which would have stopped nearly 5 million people having the right to vote. A major victory that ♦️no other political figure challenged♦️ Remember that‼️ The media are constantly on their back. They've just had to stand 2 key figures down. The topics of the emails vary, with 100ds of particular concerns. The volume means they have to prioritise. They're vetting 10,000 council candidates for next year, as some of the seats they won are up again . They're also vetting 3,000 applicants for Parliamentary seats as they don't know when there will be a general election. Vetting is tough because the media look for dirt on every candidate. Social media content from applicants is very important as the media use it as an excuse to denigrate people. What is of no consequence as a layman, suddenly becomes newsworthy as a candidate. Sadly sometimes people lie over incidental things on application. Hence people are stood down after the fact. It's not personal, it's just avoiding media scrutiny as best they can. It not easy hence I try my best as a bystander to unravel what's actually happening. I'm not paid, I volunteer my input, and to be fair it's appreciated . No other political party or individual is under this much pressure. I actually don't know any one involved in politics who works harder than Nigel Farage. That is something I respect. I help without instruction because I truly believe this is our one and only possibility to change politics. I'm not looking for perfection. For nearly 30 years, Nigel has tried his best to be moderately rightwing, whilst simultaneously highlighting severe problems that other political figures have ignored. He's savvy enough to know, bring overly too right wing will simply crush any hopes of becoming a government. We simply cannot afford that! 30 years of being outcast by the establishment, a fringe player that has taken enormous ridicule and downright insults. The establishment is literally punishing him for what they see as an audacious attempt to change the system. Politics is different to activism and commentary, people need to understand that. Politics has way more boundaries and hurdles to jump. Being taken seriously and appearing level headed is all important if you want to prepare for government. Believe me it takes more than a few radical tweets and FB posts to challenge the system, all the other parties, the MSM and former colleagues who seem hell bent on damage. For Nigel Farage even if he's fortunate enough to win a general election, the pressure will not only continue it will get far worse. The radical left will go into overdrive. Number 10 is hostile territory, I actually appreciate his indefatigable courage. I've explained all this to help you understand what it's like under this much pressure. Thanks for understanding 🙏

Here’s a cracking reply to those who accuse George Clooney of being “ Hollywood elite.” He is, of course, buT GC grew up poor and knows stuff - unlike fake anti elite populists Trump, Farage etc
Here is George Clooney’s response after Trump accused him of being a "Hollywood elite." "Here’s the thing: I grew up in Kentucky. I sold insurance door-to-door. I sold ladies’ shoes. I worked at an all-night liquor store. I would buy suits that were too big and too long and cut the bottom of the pants off to make ties so I’d have a tie to go on job interviews. I grew up understanding what it was like to not have health insurance for eight years. So this idea that I’m somehow the “Hollywood elite” and this guy who takes a shit in a gold toilet is somehow the man of the people is laughable. People in Hollywood, for the most part, are people from the Midwest who moved to Hollywood to have a career. So this idea of “coastal elites” living in a bubble is ridiculous. Who lives in a bigger bubble? He lives in a gold tower and has twelve people in his company. He doesn’t run a corporation of hundreds of thousands of people he employs and takes care of. He ran a company of twelve people! When you direct a film you have seven different unions all wanting different things, you have to find consensus with all of them, and you have to get them moving in the same direction. He’s never had to do any of that kind of stuff. I just look at it and I laugh when I see him say “Hollywood elite.” Hollywood elite? I don’t have a star on Hollywood Boulevard, Donald Trump has a star on Hollywood Boulevard! Fuck you!" - George Clooney actor, philanthropist, humanitarian & activist
