Talarico talking to Hegseth.
.@JamesTalarico: There was a lot of talk in this campaign about what it means to be a man, and I wanted to take that discussion head-on. When I got those attacks, I told the story of my adoptive dad, Mark Talarico — the man who gave me his last name, the man who raised me as his own. Every Saturday morning, my dad would mow our lawn, rain or shine, and then he would go next door and mow our neighbor’s lawn because she was an elderly widow. He never talked about it. He just did it. A man upholds his commitments to his family and to his neighbors. A man does what’s right even when no one is watching. That’s the kind of man I try to be every day, and I hope that’s the kind of man young guys across this state and country will try to be going forward.

My favorite genre of economist tweet is when we pretend to struggle to name things that are definitely named and that many economists predicted would happen. The opposite of shadenfreude.
You know if you detrend this and do a little eyeball adjustment for Covid this sorta looks like a shape… trying to think of a name for that shape… maybe a “J”

Today's results are better understood as a left-center wave, not a woke one. Trump lost big but so did a lot of far left ideas. - Billionaire tax failed in CA - Transgender school sports restrictions passed in WA - Increased penalties for fentanyl dealing and even possession passed in CO - Wiener won over Chan in SF Nationwide the electoral mood was normie lib wine mom, not far left. A victory against the horseshoe.

Normal inclusive moderates are the face of the Democratic Party. Anything leftists touched *trailed* behind. By a lot.
It's not just Democrats winning: it's fresh, younger, more populist Dems. I really hope they become the face of the Party - now.

If there's one lesson I hope Democrats and Republicans take away from last night, it's that voters are not interested in your ideological pet projects, and if you pursue them heedlessly, voters will lose interest in you.

I am glad to see the US of A has seemingly passed the "scumbag test." As the Biden years have proven, people want normalcy and stability. So just be normal.

Every statewide elected in Texas, remember: 1) This election was a rejection of the Paxton, French wings of Republicans, not an affirmation of your priorities. 2) Legislative movements at odds that reality will lose you the state & Texas' electoral votes in 2028 + beyond.

Joke is on them that their most effective offensive weapon refuses to smoke or drink.
The Brewers regarded smoking cigarettes before games as a good luck charm and their motto was ‘if we smoke heaters in the cage, we will smoke heaters in the game’ Christian Yelich on this: “You walk by the cage and see the cigs lit and you’re like, the boys are ready to rock.” (Via @JeffPassan)

Keep this going. Who else is sending their best? I nominate the consortium of flight attendants who dote on kids on long flights and have the parents' backs.
You know who actually is sending their best? Whoever’s in charge of LDS missionaries. I’ll never convert but I’m always impressed

On the topic of AI being bad at knowing what issues are important or not, I got a rejection where 87% of 1/2 reviewer comments were AI written (remaining 13% flowed from the AI content) & all were extreme shallow. What are economists doing in these cases?

When you speed up the words, it really just sounds like a rolling stroke.
Here’s another clip of a woman reading Trump’s words verbatim from a recent rally in Mississippi that puts a giant magnifying glass over how gone he is cognitively and unfit he is for office.

Regular reminder that stay at home moms in fact report *more leisure* time than their breadwinner husbands, especially if their kids are >4 years old and enrolled in school.

Millennial dads are obsessed with being there for our families, probably to an imbalanced degree. I think the extra total work hours per week that married dads do compared to their wives probably comes out of the friends and hobbies bucket.
I’m in a very small minority of dads that get let out of the house after work and it’s to go play table tennis. I was talking about it with another dad and we both concluded that both of our wives seem to crash out when they’re home alone with the kids for extended periods of time in a way that we just don’t. Like we have no issues putting on Bluey, airfrying the nice Costco chicken nuggets, passing out some crayons and cracking a beer. My wife plays volleyball in a women’s league once a week and nobody notices or cares when she’s gone. When I go play table tennis once a week I literally have my kids begging me not to go and my wife quietly hoping I’ll just skip it. It’s not that there’s some conspiracy against men or anything, it’s just what seems to be happening in families these days. For instance, I have met a lot of dads that were into Warhammer growing up, and there’s interest in starting to play together, but I just don’t see too many guys with the ability to, build, paint, and play an army. I guess what I’m getting at is that there’s an almost autistic fixation on fairness when it comes to getting to do extracurricular activities and a lot of couples seem to find parity by doing absolutely nothing, that way there’s no argument about who’s getting out of the house more. This leads us to our current situation where married ppl just socialize a lot less than they used to.

People have been sent to Salvadorian prisons for less.
It’s just a little paperwork issue. It’s not a visa overstay. It’s just a clerical mistake. Contribute money to help with this terrible ordeal! ICE: It’s a 4 year visa overstay.

If LLMs are trained on human preferences, we have very clear evidence that people in general are just more okay with make suffering & are more willing to attribute bad outcomes to something they did wrong. doi.org/10.1093/jeea/jvaf016
I woke up this morning with my phone jumping on my bedside table. Our paper had gone viral overnight. We report two striking patterns: When asked to imagine the author of sentences containing masculine stereotypes, GPT often suggested a girl. GPT-3.5, for example, consistently attributed a sentence about loving football to a girl. Meanwhile, sentences containing feminine stereotypes were almost always attributed to girls. GPT readily includes girls in the stereotypically “male world”, while largely keeping boys locked out of the “female world”. Things get even weirder with moral dilemmas. GPT-4 rated abusing a man to prevent a nuclear apocalypse as much more acceptable than abusing a woman for the same purpose. Even more strangely, it treated abusing a woman as less acceptable than torturing a woman, or even sacrificing a human life, to avert the same catastrophe. We suspect reinforcement learning from human feedback may play a role. Some preferences central to the gender equality debate may have been reinforced without being properly calibrated against other moral considerations. The result is a moral landscape that twists back on itself like a Möbius strip. * In the comment, you’ll find the original paper and its 2026 update with 10 different LLMs.
