OTD 1997: Diego Maradona played his last ever professional game.
Not any game, a superclásico at El Monumental!
Maradona came off at HT, replaced by a 19-year old Juan Román Riquelme. Boca beat River 2-1. Diego announced his retirement five days later on his 37th birthday.

If you like this shirt, you’d probably enjoy my book Narcoball: Love, Death and Football in Escobar’s Colombia. It’s my love letter to the golden age of Los Cafeteros and the rise and fall of football in my motherland in the 80s and 90s.
Finally broke out my birthday present from my dad - the official @adidas reissue of the iconic Colombia shirt from Italia ‘90. Looks 🔥 right? So happy to add this to my collection…

Killing Maradona is out now in hardback, audiobook and (No.1 best-selling) ebook editions. And it’s had a great critical response so far. Have you read “the one book you need on football’s greatest No 10” (The Irish Times) yet?

In our latest episode, @TheRealMiguelLP talked to us about his most recent book The Greatest: Real Madrid's Never Ending Story. A section of the book is dedicated to debunking myths about the club, particularly the general perception that they were 'Franco's club'.

A true tragedy of Diego playing in South America early on in his career (at which point he did many more solo-runs than later on) is how much of his brilliance has been lost due to lack of access (or existence) of recordings.
Here’s just one that was recovered:
