Hanlon's razor
"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."
Fun fact: exposed old Roman roads are so common in Syria, there’s a town in Idlib called Raseef (رصيف), named after the 1km of pristinely preserved Roman road that used to connect Aleppo to Antioch. It has been around since Marcus Aurelius’ rule around 170AD
Another remarkable archaeological discovery in #Syria.
Recent heavy rains in the Eastern region suddenly exposed a stone-paved surface in Sukhnah desert (E. #Homs), suggesting the remains of an ancient road.
Based on the available evidence, 2 types of stones can be distinguished: very smooth, regular slabs - which could also be mistaken for a building's courtyard - and more irregular stones that could indicate later modifications/additions.
The smoother paving is certainly consistent with Roman roads found in other parts of Syria.
The site is also particularly interesting because it's located close to Qasr Hayr Sharqi, a fortified Umayyad complex featuring 2 palaces with their enclosures, as well as a bathhouse & gardens - in middle of the desert.
An aqueduct supplied the complex with water from springs in the Kawm oasis.
One possibility is that this Roman road remained in use during the Umayyad period, serving as an access route to the palatial complex.
This wouldn't be unusual: structures built before the Islamic period were often reused for centuries.
While History often presents the Islamic conquest of Syria as a clear break, archaeology frequently reveals a much greater degree of continuity, with earlier infrastructure & buildings remaining in use long after.
Fact few hours of heavy rain could wash away 30 cm of sand and expose such a structure gives you an idea of how much of Syria's ancient heritage still remains buried - just waiting to be discovered.

He said: You have disappointed China & obstructed Chinese investment. If China loses confidence, why would anyone else invest (in Pakistan)? America is replacing China, and Americans have told me this directly. Our national resources are being sold off while politicians secure their own share first, serve their foreign masters next, and put Pakistan’s interests last.

Statement | Qatar Condemns Attack on LNG Carrier in Arabian Gulf
Doha | November 1, 2026
The State of Qatar expresses its strong condemnation and denunciation of the attack that targeted "Al Mayeda" liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company Limited (Nakilat), while it was sailing in the Arabian Gulf. Qatar considers this a dangerous act that threatens the safety of maritime navigation and the security of global energy supplies.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirms that the State of Qatar reserves its right to take all necessary measures, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, to protect its assets and safeguard its vessels and their crews. The Ministry points out that the relevant authorities have initiated the necessary investigations to determine the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also warns against the dangers of such reckless and irresponsible actions, and the grave repercussions they may have on regional security and stability, as well as the global economy - particularly the potential environmental risks resulting from the targeting of energy carriers, and the serious consequences for the marine environment and the water security of the countries in the region.

An interesting detail in today’s editorial by Hossein Shariatmadari, editor-in-chief of Kayhan.
- Shariatmadari claims that, in the ongoing contacts through Qatar and Pakistan, Washington is insisting on the downblending of approximately 400 kg of uranium enriched to 60%, either inside Iran or in a third country, as well as the return of IAEA inspectors to Iranian nuclear facilities.
- According to Shariatmadari, Tehran has rejected these demands, maintaining that its seven conditions must be addressed first.

🚨 BREAKING | A source who attended today’s closed-door talks in Qatar between Iranian and Qatari representatives told me: “Nothing is moving. Iran hasn’t budged an inch. The Iranian delegation now in Qatar is made up of people who can’t even decide what they’re allowed to eat. So they’re going to decide on a deal with the U.S.? Both sides know where this is going. The only question is when Trump decides, and how. Everything else is already settled.”
According to the source, Iran is showing some flexibility over the Strait of Hormuz, but is making far-reaching demands even there.

Another damaged Russian Su-30SM appears to have emerged from the October 21 crash in Kaliningrad Oblast.
OSINT-Bджоли published photos of a second aircraft with severe wing damage, suggesting the incident involved a mid-air collision between two Su-30SMs: one crashed, while the other survived with a badly damaged wing.
That would bring the toll from this incident to one aircraft lost and one damaged. The collision remains unconfirmed.
