On this day in North Carolina history October 26, 1895. North Carolina helped change football forever, and it happened because a desperate player broke the rules. UNC was playing Georgia in Atlanta when fullback Joel Whitaker faced a Georgia rush that threatened to block his punt. Instead of kicking the ball, he threw it forward to teammate George Stephens. Stephens caught it and ran 70 yards for a touchdown. Georgia's coach, legendary Pop Warner, protested. The forward pass was illegal, but the referee never saw the throw. The touchdown stood, and UNC won 6 to 0. The forward pass wouldn't become legal until 1906. Think about that the next time you watch a quarterback throw a touchdown. A play that helped shape modern football started with a desperate decision by a Tar Heel. North Carolina history is full of stories like this one. 🏈

What could go wrong?

NFL owners have approved regular season games being played internationally today during league meetings. The league plans to play one regular-season international game starting in the 2007 season, scaling up to two games per year starting in 2008.

They should have done a 2-3-2. There were no conflicts with the Hawks and Warriors if Game 5 had been played in Atlanta and Game 6 in San Francisco.

One proposal would move Game 6 to Friday, Oct. 30 and Game 7, if necessary, from Saturday, Oct. 31 to Tuesday, Nov. 3. That would mean three days between each of Games 5/6 and 6/7. The WNBA would support that proposal, but only if both teams agree to it, sources said.

I wonder if they could have done a 2-3-2

Game Six is now necessary, and the WNBA has some problem solving to do.

They absolutely could have. The Hawks are away Monday and the Warriors don’t play Thursday.

This is the way to go.

Well well well I thought people didn’t care about the small market Brewers and Rays? I was told the ratings would be bad!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know

Just a friendly reminder this morning that the school in Raleigh was the tie breaker to vote in Stanford into the ACC.

Joe is in mourning that the Brewers swept away his Dodgers
Brian Webber@bwwebberOct 24
I unmuted the Fox broadcast to confirm that ball was indeed on the line and fair. In 45 seconds, I heard John Smoltz repeat exactly what Joe Davis said because he clearly wasn't listening and then Generic Joe go into some long-winded back story on a player. Mute is back on...

Why wouldn’t they? They are in the same metropolitan area. The Braves support the Falcons and the Falcons support the Braves….and that’s hard for me sometimes because I’m a Panthers fan but I get it. I live in NC, not GA.

Boy ain’t that the truth! The Bucs really had the Rays’ backs with that whole ballpark situation

I’d be pissed off too, it’s taking viewership away from their channels, but the station groups knew what they were getting into

Big story in the world of media and sports: ABC affiliates are not happy with Disney’s extreme multi platform plan to showcase and monetize the Super Bowl. Story here: cnbc.com/2026/10/22/disneys-…

Disney’s multiplatform Super Bowl plan frustrates ABC affiliates

Disney is airing the Super Bowl on ABC, ESPN, Disney+, ESPN2, ESPNU, and NFL Network, to the chagrin of local station affiliates.

Gray Media: Signs local deals with several NBA teams including the Hawks for TV rights, and also the Hornets for out of town rights in nearby markets. Also Gray Media: Doesn’t bother to show national NBC game on main channels. Make it make sense.
Joe Wright@SctvmanOct 20
It appears basically all of Gray's NBC affiliates (up to 64 stations) are preempting Celtics-Pistons and moving it to a subchannel or preempting it completely. Nashville, Columbia, Omaha NE, Wilmington, Montgomery among a few markets affected
