Christine Sun Kim Named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow
Christine Sun Kim, the featured artist of MMCA × LG OLED Series 2026, has been named a 2026 MacArthur Fellow.
The MacArthur Fellowship, awarded by the U.S.-based MacArthur Foundation, recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional creativity and potential across a wide range of fields, including the arts, sciences, and humanities, and supports them in freely pursuing their work and research. The MacArthur Foundation highlighted Kim’s use of drawing, murals, video, installation, and other media to give visual and conceptual form to the complex experiences of Deaf people in a society that prioritizes sound and spoken language, as well as her exploration of the political and cultural dimensions of communication.
Kim’s Have Many Dumb Fights Against Rock is currently on view at Seoul Box, MMCA Seoul, through November 29. In this work, movements from American Sign Language (ASL) are visualized as lines that extend across the screen, walls, and floor, raising questions about communication and relationships that take shape through difference and conflict.
