When our memorial to Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontรซ was dedicated in 1947, the diaereses (the two dots over the โ€˜eโ€™) were missing from the literary sisters' surname. In 2024, journalist and Brontรซ historian Sharon Wright visited the Abbey and spotted the mistake. She wrote to our Dean and the diaereses were added to the memorial, correcting the historic error. #31DaysOfGraves #Accident

1. Before people prized authenticity Hollywood casting was a joy. Savalas (Greek parentage) was also a follower of Genghis Khan at one point. Most versatile was Mexican Anthony Quinn
Telly Savalas as Pancho Villa (1972). "Who loves ya baby!"

Foundation stone for Alfred Waterhouse's Manchester Town Hall was laid on this day 1868. Took almost 10 years to erect at a cost approaching ยฃ1m, described as โ€˜unequalled for size, completeness and adaptability for its purpose among the municipal buildings of Europeโ€™.

Behold the shortest street in the world. And it's in Scotland. Ebenezer Place in Wick, Caithness, is just 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in) long. It has exactly one address: the door of No. 1 Bistro at Mackays Hotel. You could lie across it, though not advisable in a Caithness wind. 1/2

The text on this cliff is funnier than it looks. Carved twenty metres up the rock of Van, it runs in three columns, Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian, 27 lines each, all saying the same thing. Here is what it says: โ€œA great god is Ahuramazda, the greatest of gods, who created this earth, who created that sky, who created man, who created happiness for man, who made Xerxes king, one king for all, one ruler for all. I am Xerxes, the great king, the king of kings, king of all kinds of peoples, king of this earth great and wide, the son of king Darius, the Achaemenid. King Xerxes says: King Darius, my father, by the grace of Ahuramazda built much that was good, and he gave orders to dig this niche out, but because he did not make an inscription, I ordered this inscription to be made.โ€ An imperial monument whose real subject is an empty panel his father left behind.

One of the amusing morsels in the new biography of Babs Cartland is that she considered Cromwellโ€™s New Model Army โ€œthe most homosexual army thereโ€™s ever been" and everything they did wrong was because to it! Heavens. We hope no one told her about The Sacred Band Of Thebes!
