I post NE dialect, history, old things & anything that interests me. I have eclectic tastes in art but especially like "northern, grim, industrial". I reply to much Brexit & women's rights though rarely post those here. Owner of a very dry sense of humour.

Replying to @northumbriana
My mum had a spoon with a blade ground on the edge, made it easier but still remember it as hard work

Exploding turnips ! That would indeed be a smell to remember.
Replying to @northumbriana
I can still remember the smell from when the bigger boys asked to borrow mine to knock on a door for trick or treat, put a banger inside it & exploded it all over the street! I hadn't even knocked on a door. My poor mother had to carve out three for me and my two brothers too

More turnip tips.
We used matches to stand the candle up. 4 of them, stuck around the candle.

Turnipy recollections.

We never had a turnip lantern back in the 1960s. Don't think our dad's wrists were up to it, but there was always one kid on the street who managed to have one, and he became the Halloween King. Parents also weren't keen on door knocking with said King "penny for Halloween"ing.

They're a bit easier to carve if you steam them for a bit first.

Turniptober 26. Snaggie. More recollections of borrowing..... Does anyone live near a turnip field ? You will know if you do simply by the aroma. A lovely smell. I posted a picture of a turnip field in Devon last week.
This type of borrowing in Newbiggin was “snaggie raiding” conducted from Peacey’s field at Spital under legendary threat of his 12 bore shotgun Only the brave

More turnipy recollections. First - the borrowing of turnips from a field in Dudley. Now - the borrowing of the church candles. A theme is emerging.....
Difficult to get a candle 🕯️ to stand up in them. Some years we had Holy turnips...candles from church. It's all tea lights in church now. Don't tell the pope it might be a sin... supposed to be for the lady altar not turnips 🫣

Turnipy recollections.
I'm delighted, for the sake of my hands, that my visiting grandchildren assume the only option is pumpkins. I can remember in the 50s "borrowing" turnips from the edge of the field in Dudley then sitting with my cousin on the step in Green Lane hacking at them for hours

Turniptober 25. A fozy turnip is frost bitten & thus spongy. Also one which is overgrown and thus light & hollow sounding. Were often used as footballs ! Compare fozy.OED.Scottish & dialect. Spongy, loose textured. Unknown origin though Norwegian fos, spongy.

Time to dip into British turnip history. A thread on the turnip. In 1865 the pages of Bells Newspaper were full of top turnip advertisments.

Today's piece of turnipy information.
We don't carve pumpkins in Scotland, we carve neeps (turnips)!* I think they look far scarier and that's what they're for, to ward off bad spirits, keeping us safe with their light. *of course people do carve pumpkins too, but this is the real tradition.

HMS Valerian had been built by the South Shields yard of Charles Rennoldson’s during the First World War. Among those lost in her sinking was 19-year-old Able Seaman Joseph Hudson of Berkeley Street, Jarrow.
The Daily Mirror, 25 October 1926, reports on the 'feared death-roll of 80 in lost British warship,' as HMS Valerian sunk in a hurricane off the coast of Bermuda bit.ly/47hw8r5 #OTD #1926Newspapers
