the parenthetical "note that a red flag isn't the same as a dealbreaker, and it simply needs investigation and explanation" might be the most useful part of this tweet. very useful distinction, especially because it's actionable.
"when you look at someone through rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags"? yep, investigate the flags
People are going to be mad at this, and I don't defend them in general. These are calibrated for me, not for the general population.
Green flag: Strained or non-existent relationship with parents. For context, my mother doesn't know that I have a college degree. We're just not on that level of closeness, and I can't relate to people who are that close to their parents. This isn't mandatory, I can handle a parent-gap relationship, but it's a green flag because it does cause confusion in relationships.
Red flag (note that a red flag isn't the same as a dealbreaker, and it simply needs investigation and explanation): certain fashion choices that I can't mention because girls might stop wearing and thereby distort the signal
where are with llm memory? i know that chatgpt just kinda remembers stuff from
our chats and that claude makes memories and tells you about it, but it seems that the memory isn’t too good or sophisticated (just an md file that’s always in context?). it seems that one of the places where human brains still have a solid advantage over llms is indexing of memories
My strongest held beliefs:
- good decision making is the most important thing you can learn. The earlier you can start making good decisions, the better
- if you focus on a single goal, show up every single day and take, conscious, meaningful action towards it, you will reach your destination in less time than you think
- talent isn’t as important as embodying traits that everyone can appreciate. Effort is undeniable and universally understood
- you need to acknowledge you are a soul. A spiritual being. You can accomplish whatever you set out to, but if it doesn’t nourish your soul, it doesn’t matter
- values are your compass. You need a set of values that you can map every single decision/ choice you make back to
i, like @phokarlsson, find the evolutionary-psych theory of music not very satisfying, but i do think that in some sense it has to be that way -- namely that we have these capabilities that evolved for more 'pragmatic' survival reasons that can be played with to produce rich experience. however, i think the analogy to painting or visual art isn't very good, i find music to be much more like the written word: reading *also* exploits that evolutionary machinery, but it doesn't seem to operate quite at that level unless the authors want it to
when the book title has “and applications” at the end of the title: it’s fine despite how thick it is
when it starts with “introduction to”: gulp and it’s thick but too much
when it starts with “elementary”: double gulp and thin
when it’s just the name of the field: faaaaak and what is this, a pamphlet?
iyk the yellow books yk
