i love my heart so much. i love being in my heart. i love real authentic feeling. i love when the guards come down. i love when caring is just there. i love meeting myself there. finding myself there. there i am, i've always been. oh how i want to live there, there, there

What this looks like in practice (a note I shared last year): “Yesterday, I sat down with my 3.5yo as he sobbed because he was told he couldn’t open a Christmas gift he found until Tuesday. After guiding him through multiple rounds of “what” questions, mixed with deep empathy for the pain and grief that came up at each level he was quite happy to not have the present. This was the path that led him to not caring about the present: 1. Grieving he can’t have the present today 2. Grieving that the Christmas cards that came in the mail this week “are boring” 3. Grieving that his stuffed animals are too small to hug 4. Grieving that he “has to sleep alone at night” 5. Grieving that as a baby there were times at night he wanted to held by my wife and he was “all alone” 6. Remembering how it felt to be held as a baby (a state of deep presence, the state we humans all desperately want to return to and cover our pain with food, addictions, distractions, purchases, etc) I then asked him how he felt about not opening the present until Christmas Eve. He replied “I feel good” 😊 It’s wild to see the strategy his attachments are using to avoid the feeling of remembering what it felt like to not be held as a baby when he was alone at night. And how powerful letting him grieve is at clearing and releasing the trauma related to it!”

"the vast insentient machine of the conceptual mind" is a fascinating phrase
The main reason a person lacks taste is that he's trying to decide what's good and bad using *concepts.* He watches a movie, and before deciding whether he should like it, he queries his identity: "I'm a cultured person. What would a cultured person think of this?" He queries the current status landscape: "What do critics and internet edgelords think of this?" He assesses genre: "This is a [superhero movie], which means I'm not allowed to like it." He does everything other than simply perceive, like a baby would, or a mystic or a fool. Do these particular lights and sounds make him happy? Do the expressions on the actor's face right now move him? He doesn't know. He's not paying attention to that. He's too busy feeding his sense impressions into the vast insentient machine of the conceptual mind. Does this man live inside you? I promise you this: as soon as you invite him to go on vacation, you will start developing taste immediately wherever you point your attention.

Actually it was this. Nothing throws stuff harder or with better accuracy than humans.

Cash app $derekfaster PayPal [email protected] Long story short, the last few years have been...wild. I had my right leg amputated, was homeless, spent 30 days in a psych unit due to a (redacted) attempt. The GOOD NEWS is I'm much better now (Zoloft and a great place to live) the bad news is I'm broke as a joke until my disability comes through. I would be incredibly grateful for any and all help. TYFYATTM ❤️

New podcast with Toby Sola (@tobysola) about meditation, procrastination, and how to build feedback loops between deep practice and living a more effective, meaningful life! I originally reached out to Toby to understand more about 'Science of Enlightenment' author Shinzen Young's challenging relationship with procrastination. When you hear people talk about the deep end of meditation, it’s easy to come away thinking, “Meditation Is All You Need", or "This Will Solve All My Problems" This is not the case! Toby describes how Shinzen sought help with procrastination through therapy (CBT, no less) after decades of meditation. Of course, meditation can help with many, many problems. People can experience enormous reductions in suffering, let alone the sheer beauty and joy of simply letting go. Turning towards our experience is profound, and we both value deep practice and regular retreats. On the whole, people would benefit from more of it. Still, you can become effective without meditating, and meditate deeply while struggling with work, money, relationships, etc. But meditation is incredibly powerful! We’re working with the building blocks of experience, eg. attention, seeing clearly, staying with discomfort. It's about actually practicing and experiencing things we might otherwise just intellectualize. We still have to want to apply what we learn to our lives, though. For some people, that happens spontaneously. Most of us benefit from supportive feedback loops, like with coaching, therapy, good friends, and a community of people who share our values. Sometimes “I just need to meditate more” is correct. A week on retreat might be what you need (especially 1x every year or two). But that shouldn’t be a substitute for having hard conversations, reassessing priorities, and following through on commitments. At its best, we build a virtuous loop of self-trust, insight, and effective action. As we do this, and it becomes easier to let go in meditation. Fundamentally, it's about not avoiding ourselves and not avoiding life. Watch on Youtube: youtu.be/33NQeMpiN64 Listen on your podcast app: pod.link/1679255739
