The Civil Rights Act had a 59% approval rating. I know it's fun to pretend that the correct stance was always unpopular so you can pretend your enemies will be the bad guys of future period pieces but the majority of the country was actually convinced on this.
“The Matthew Yglesias of 1963 would have been telling [JFK and LBJ] don’t touch this civil rights bill. It’s unpopular.” I thought this was one of the more fascinating and important exchanges with @mattyglesias, where I challenged him on how far politicians should defer to polls on huge moral issues, and he pushed back on my analogy. Mehdi conflates bill approval with protest approval. "This civil rights bill" was popular in '63. It had +16 approval (54-38) by Aug. '63 & +30 (61-31) in Jan. '64 before its June passage. Desegregation was generally popular w/ >+30 support for SCOTUS anti-segregation rulings news.gallup.com/poll/3427/most…

this is always how the parasites defend their asset seizure: average joe, the middle class, poor kids. but none of these people are getting paid. your wealth will be seized and given to criminals, illegal aliens, and ro khanna's friends. suffering will increase. he won't care.
Looks like billionaires will stay and figure out a way to pay the tax. If we pass Prop 40, poor California kids can have healthcare. Gavin, can you and Sergey Brin stop with your fear-mongering of a billionaire exodus?

The thing where one is obliged to pretend to believe this obviously false but politically convenient statistic in order to remain a liberal in good standing is one of those things that used to just kinda grate on me but after 25 years has driven me fully up the wall

A milquetoast response so far from meeting the moment it’s actually insane

the news will tell you that the left are protesting because "of insufficient school funding" This is questionable at best. France has a massive welfare state. Gigantic. They do not lack for public sector expenditure. - French public spending accounts for an almost incomprehensible 57.2% of GDP - the French deficit is 5.1% of GDP and the debt to GDP ratio is 115% - France spends more on education on both a relative and absolute basis than the EU average France can't meaningfully increase public spending. they are maxed out. Their 10-year bond trades at a higher yield than Italy or Greece, historical basket cases. so, it's not about public spending. France is an insanely lavish welfare state to the point of serious dysfunction. what's it about then?

California has lost its brain over this… and the male inmates are loving it…
It’s been over five years since a law came into effect allowing biological men into women’s prisons in California if they identify as transgender, and the consequences have been devastating, says Amie Ichikawa, an advocate for female inmates and founder of Woman II Woman. “These are men that are tattooed from head to toe. 33.8 percent are registered sex offenders.” “They were advertised as delicate flowers who needed a safe place to do their time, and they sent the exact people that they said they wouldn't send.” “They said: there would be no sex offenders; there would be no woman beaters; there would be no one with a long history of violence against women. And that's exactly who they sent.” “I can't think of any worse demographic of people to send into the women's prison, knowing that 92 percent of that population are survivors of some kind of sexual abuse.” “These people don't even have to present as female.” “When they started to install the condom machines into the women's prisons after the transfers started, I thought there's nothing lower than this. Nothing.” @ichinita310 @womaniiwomaninc @IWF

What AOC did here is despicable and pathetic even for her. it's a joke to think you posture as some sort of a national leader while you go around definitively, publicly proclaiming individuals guilty of horrific crimes before they've ever been charged with, let alone convicted of, those crimes, especially when most evidence is unknown and, of what is known, there's so much evidence casting doubt on the accusations. AOC never heard of these 7 Cornell students until like 6 seconds ago, but now definitively decree they're ALL "gang rapists." But worse is that AOC lies here repeatedly, making claims that even the alleged victim denies. Nobody "lured her" into the frat house. She went there voluntarily and showed up drunk. She voluntarily used drugs and had sex with at least the first three men if not all. She wrote one of those students an email afterward saying how nothing they did was criminal and how much fun she had having sex with the two of them and hoped to do it again. She then asked for an invitation to another party at this same frat house 8 days later, and became enraged for the first time when the frat president said it was best if she didn't come. Nobody in the group chat said she was "incapacitated" as AOC alleged. None of this means that there was no rape. It means that minimally responsible, ethical people refrain from pronouncing guilt (or innocence) until they know what they're fucking talking about and there are at least charges filed. None of that applies to AOC.
AOC makes WILD claims on Cornell 7: “Seven men drugged and gang raped a 20-year-old woman. They lured her into a frat house, drugged her with ketamine, and took turns gang raping her for seven hours.”
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
AOC described civil lawsuit allegations as fact. No criminal charges filed. DA: 2024 police statement described voluntary drug use and sex, not nonconsensual drugging or gang rape. Now under AG James as special prosecutor. tompkinscountyny.gov/News-articles/… nytimes.com/2026/10/01/nyr…

agree: women cannot consent to sex after having had any alcohol at all. to ensure this is properly enforced, we'll need women-only dorms with strict curfews and oversight by chaperones until they are married and oversight of their decision-making can be safely handed off to their husbands.
Choosing to have a drink is not consent, and it’s never a license for sexual assault. New York law should reflect that. I support closing the voluntary intoxication loophole and will work with the Legislature to get it done.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
There is no law in New York saying choosing to drink means consenting to sex. Current New York law says voluntary intoxication does not invalidate an individual's ability to give consent, as it does not meet the state's standard of "mentally incapacitated". nysenate.gov/legislation/la… nysenate.gov/legislation/la…

The fact that Democrat politicians have jumped to a conclusion of the case while evidence is still being compiled shows how unserious they take the entire legal process and the fact that they view the online mob as a core constituency group… from Duke lacrosse to the KY boy smiling at the Native American, you think someone would have learned a lesson.
Jane Doe did an incredibly brave thing by coming forward. Cornell University and District Attorney Van Houten failed to act, and in doing so they failed her. They also broke the public’s trust in institutions meant to protect us. Restoring that trust requires a thorough investigation and charging decisions the public can have faith in. @GovKathyHochul made the right call in referring this case to our outstanding Attorney General, @NewYorkStateAG Tish James, and I’m grateful for their leadership. I also stand with the Governor in calling to close the intoxication loophole. I’m proud to co-sponsor this legislation in the Assembly, and the legislature should pass it as one of our very first acts when we return to session.

In the foreword to Bonfire of the Vanities, Tom Wolfe makes the point that the death of the novel happened in part because American life itself is so absurd and surreal that no writer could ever hope to match, let alone exceed its daily supply of retarded stories and scandals

You know what exacerbates the spread of typhus in homeless encampments? Keeping dogs and cats in them. They transmit fleas from rats to humans. There should be no animals living with street addicts. Period.
NEW: A flea-borne typhus outbreak is under investigation in L.A.’s Wilshire Center after 7 people got sick and 6 were hospitalized. The disease, historically associated with earlier eras of poor sanitation, is re-emerging in L.A. County. Health officials say fleas are the key exposure.
