Today’s shocking Grenfell report calls to mind the hell of Robert Tressell’s 1912 masterpiece ‘The ragged trousered philanthropists’. Corruption, exploitation, the Great Money Trick. How little has changed in the lives of the most vulnerable in society.

Despite the horrific events in Southport this week, the local community have come together with brave acts of resistance.
Including this very brave woman who faced down the rioters.

🫶 We have seen people in Southport come together to condemn Tuesday night’s violence and stand in solidarity with their neighbours.
However, they must not be left to deal with this alone.

At first, I assumed this was more from David Miller @Tracking_Power. Then I noticed it didn’t include Nightingale (the nursing home, not Florence) so I knew it wasn’t wacky enough for that particular crackpot.

Not for the first time @Nigel_Farage has played the media like a fiddle. It is the one thing he is very good at. But now that he has played his latest tune, they - and especially in this case the broadcast media - need to think long and hard about the role they have played in all this. Constant platforming without real scrutiny - of his role in Brexit, which he barely talks about now; of the financing of his party; of his contempt for the rule of law as shown in his sycophantic relationship with Trump; and now like the Tories pumping misinformation far and wide. Populism never works when it gets anywhere near power. It only gets as far as it does because “it makes for good copy.” But it can do a lot of damage to democracy on the way.
I anticipate any legislation making it compulsory to volunteer without pay would get bogged down with judicial review challenges. Surely, if the Tories really want to mix with poor people, why not just give working class kids weekend memberships at the Garrick?
