According to many, New York City is a โcity of immigrants,โ and you would think Black Americans barely exist here based on the way people talk. But the moment a crime or some negative incident takes place, suddenly that narrative changes. Now, all of a sudden, there are millions of Black Americans running around committing crimes.
And thatโs exactly my issue with how Black identity gets discussed within the diaspora. Everybody wants to claim Blackness when itโs convenient, beneficial, or something to celebrate. But the moment Blackness becomes associated with a negative stereotype, thatโs when the distinctions start.
Suddenly, the conversation becomes: โIโm not Black, Iโm Jamaican.โ โIโm not Black, Iโm Haitian.โ โIโm not Black, Iโm Nigerian.โ
You canโt distance yourself from Black Americans whenever thereโs a negative stereotype, but then turn around and embrace a shared Black identity whenever thereโs something to gain from it.
Thereโs absolutely nothing wrong with being proud of your nationality or ethnicity. The issue is the selective identification and the double standard. If weโre going to have conversations about Black identity, culture, and accountability, then we need to be consistent about who weโre talking about instead of treating Black Americans as the default representation of everything negative.

Great question. Do remember this was created with A.I. based off the changes going off the below 2024 OMB revisions link. You gotta read it.
I expect a margin of error. You won't see the final until 2030. Soft rollout at Colleges & Job apps til then.

This is unbelievable.
Nearly $2,000,000,000,000 has been wiped out from the US stock market today.
Recombination does shuffle DNA so distant segments drop out, and reference panels use modern samples that can miss historical diversity or cause approximate matches. Past about 7 generations the genetic signal for specific ethnicity gets unreliable for many ancestors. Paperwork and oral history still give the named ethnic or tribal details DNA estimates cannot. Both sources work better together.
DNA tests match modern reference panels, not pure pre-colonial ethnic labels. Africa has thousands of groups and sampling still lags, even as companies expand coverage. Genetics and history work better together than either alone.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT FOR THE SEMANTICS CROWD
1. DEFINITIONS FIRST
Before arguing, ask them to define the term in one sentence. If they won't, they don't have a position, just an objection. If they do, hold them to that definition for the rest of the conversation.
2. THE WORD IS NOT THE THING
Renaming something doesn't change what happened. Ask directly: "If we called it something else, would the deed, the census entry, or the stolen wages change?" If the answer is no, the label argument is a detour.
3. RECORDS BEAT OPINIONS
Whoever disputes a document has to bring a better one. "That source is biased" isn't evidence. A primary record, a peer-reviewed study, or a statute is evidence. No counter-document, no counter-claim.
4. ONE DISPUTE AT A TIME
Semantics players stack five objections so you can't answer any of them fully. Pick one, settle it, and make them concede or produce evidence before moving to the next. "We'll get to that. First, this one."
5. CALLING A FALLACY IS NOT AN ARGUMENT
Saying "logical fallacy" doesn't refute anything. They have to show where the reasoning actually breaks. Citing a primary source or established expert consensus isn't "appeal to authority," and "established" isn't a fallacy. It's the evidence they're refusing to address.
6. CONSISTENCY TEST
If they cite census records, slave schedules, or historical law when it helps them, they don't get to throw out the same records when it hurts them. Make them pick one.
7. ASK WHAT WOULD CHANGE THEIR MIND
Ask, "What evidence would convince you?" If they can't name anything, it isn't a debate, it's a performance. Say that out loud.
8. STEELMAN ONCE, THEN STOP
State their best argument fairly, one time, and answer it. You don't owe them a new answer every time they reword the same claim.
9. THREE-EXCHANGE RULE
If three replies go by without new evidence, close it out. Post a short summary of where things stand, what you proved, and what they couldn't answer, then leave.
10. PLAY TO THE AUDIENCE
You rarely convert the person who's arguing in bad faith. You convert the people reading. Stay sharp, stay factual, keep it short, and let the contrast do the work.
EXIT LINE:
"You've disputed the word, the source, and the definition, but not the fact. The record stands. I'm done here."
THE WORD GAMES ARE A WEDGE. HERE'S WHY.
Some claim race is fake, so the Black race is fake. Others say Black is an ethnicity made only in America, that being "Negro" never required African ancestry, and that those of us who identify as African American should "go back to Africa." None of it survives the record, and all of it cuts the chain of identity that reparations claims depend on.
1. THE LAW
Programs that distribute benefits by race face strict scrutiny under the Constitution's equal protection guarantees. Lineage is stronger ground: descent from people held in U.S. chattel slavery, or living as free Black people under legal oppression here before 1865. Proving lineage requires the state's own records, and those records say "Negro," "Colored," and "Black."
2. THE RECORD DEFINED "NEGRO" BY AFRICAN DESCENT
Virginia's 1662 law made a child's status follow the mother, so slavery passed down through African-descended women. Hypodescent laws classified people as Negro by any African ancestry. Virginia's 1924 Racial Integrity Act made it the "one drop" rule. The 1930 census told enumerators to record anyone with any Negro blood as Negro. You can't cite the records to prove your lineage and then reject what they say about who you are.
3. GENETICS AND THE TRADE
Large genetic studies put average African ancestry among African Americans at roughly 73%, traced to West and Central Africa. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Database records about 388,000 Africans brought to mainland North America. Our ancestors didn't appear here out of nowhere. They were taken from somewhere, and that somewhere was Africa.
4. "MADE IN AMERICA" IS HALF TRUE
Our ethnicity was formed here, and that's the whole point of FBA. But it was formed from African people under American slavery. Both things are true. And "Black people only exist here" collapses the moment you look at Brazil, which has the largest Black population outside Africa, or the fact that "negro" is a Spanish and Portuguese word.
5. "RACE IS FAKE"
Race is a social construct. So is money, and so are borders, and both still decide who eats and who gets deported. A construct the law enforced for 300 years produced real land theft, real stolen wages, and real violence. A construct can't be fake while its damages are real.
6. "GO BACK TO AFRICA"
Telling us to go back to Africa admits we came from there. It also repeats the American Colonization Society, which spent the 1800s trying to ship free Black people out of the country. And the injury didn't start on a Virginia dock. It started with kidnapping in Africa. Erase the African origin and you erase the first crime in the chain.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Our lineage is African in origin, American in formation, and documented in the state's own ink. Reject that history and you reject the claim. You don't get to rewrite ours to fit your theory.
- **73%:** This comes from Bryc et al., 2015, in the *American Journal of Human Genetics*, using 23andMe data. Individuals vary widely, so keep the word "average."
- **388,000:** This is the TAST estimate for mainland North America. Expect that crowd to challenge it. The number counts direct arrivals, and more came via the Caribbean.
- **Hypodescent:** The rule varied by state and era. Some states used fractions like one-quarter or one-eighth before adopting "one drop." That's why the post says "any African ancestry" generally and pins "one drop" to Virginia in 1924.
- **The law section:** I shortened it to fit everything else. The strict scrutiny caveat from my last message still applies, since courts have sometimes treated ancestry as a proxy for race.
