Thanks to @USFHealth @USFHealthMed for highlighting our research. It was also fun to be interviewed by Dave Scheiber. By targeting high blood pressure, USF Health research on kidneys could also help your heart usf.edu/health/news/2024/kid…

Great example of how nephrology and rheumatology can work together to improve patient care! Great to see @USFHealth and @TGHCares bringing these specialties together to provide coordinated, multidisciplinary care for patients with lupus nephritis. #Nephrology #Rheumatology #Lupus
For patients with lupus nephritis, navigating care can mean coordinating multiple specialists, appointments and treatment plans, making an already complex disease even more difficult to manage. USF Health is changing that! Launched in 2025, the Comprehensive Lupus Nephritis Clinic brings rheumatology and nephrology together to provide same-day, multidisciplinary care, helping patients receive coordinated care, support early detection and move quickly from diagnosis to treatment. The clinic is a joint effort between USF Health and Tampa General Hospital, bringing together expertise and resources to support patients throughout their care. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) should not be involved in agency decisions on the awards of grants. As I stated in my July 6 letter, a proposed OMB rule would politicize grantmaking. The Continuing Resolution—which passed the Senate, House, and was signed into law on September 2—blocks OMB’s proposed rule or any substantially similar one. Any attempt to politicize grantmaking at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), or any other agency, by another means—whether an Executive Order or guidance—is contrary to congressional intent. Imposing a political review on awards that have already been selected through a rigorous scientific and merit-based process undermines the long-standing principle that the government funds awards based on scientific need and merit, rather than political ideology.

We updated our Susztaklabbiobank website susztaklab.com For almost two decades our laboratory has collected and profiled human kidney tissue, paired it with mouse and rat models and with the genetics of millions of people, and built one of the most complete maps of the human kidney that exists. This site is where we share it: genome-wide association results, expression, methylation, protein and open-chromatin maps, single-cell and single-nucleus atlases, spatial transcriptomes and animal-model resources, each in an interactive browser you can query today. Please send your suggestions how we could improve our site. Let's cure kidney disease together !

I recently had to step off the ECI board of the ISHR-NAS after my promotion. The board is seeking two new members. It’s a great way to give back to the ISHR-NAS community, develop leadership skills, and you get to work alongside some awesome scientists and friends. Consider applying, you won’t regret it #ISHRNAS

We confirmed this three ways: spatial data (CosMx and Xenium) showed proximal tubule markers inside fetal renal corpuscles, and Confetti lineage tracing in mice found single clones giving rise to proximal tubule, parietal cells, and podocytes within one nephron. The lesson: a fate set during early patterning can be revised later in development. This plasticity is not sloppiness. It appears to be a built-in way for the tissue to reach the correct final architecture — a principle that likely reaches well beyond the kidney. Spatial transcriptomics demonstrates fetal-specific widespread PT molecular expression patterns within the renal corpuscle. A model diagram showing that a committed proximal tubule cell can still switch onto the parietal cell path, adding a late correction step to the classic linear model.

1/ 🚨 Out today in @ScienceAdvances , and I could not be more excited. ELF3: a GWAS gene that reprograms injured kidney tubules. science.org/doi/epdf/10.1126… GWAS have handed nephrology more than 1000 kidney function loci. Here we nail one down: ELF3 is the effector gene at an eGFR GWAS locus. When we delete it in a sick kidney, injured proximal tubule cells turn back toward a normal epithelial state. 🧵
