PMC COVlD Update (U.S.)
Nov 2, 2026
Transmission typically falls in October, but not this year. We're seeing the highest levels for this time of year relative to any prior year since pandemic onset. Let that sink in.
Presently, 47 states and territories have known outbreaks. The PMC model estimates that >1 million Americans are getting infected each day, meeting our criteria for characterizing transmission as a "surge." We estimate that 1 in 43 Americans are actively infectious, varing considerably be region.

My internet is completely out, so I am tethered to my phone because updating our measles dashboard is that important.
52 new measles cases reported today.
Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Utah reported cases.
Yes, Utah. Pop-up cases still happen in states where there have been community transmission.
You should not assume your state is safe before, during, or after a large-scale outbreak.
Wearing a respirator in shared air spaces will prevent you from contracting measles, as will having had 2 doses of a post-1970s MMR series. If you are high-risk, immunocompromised, or were vaccinated before 1980, you should ask your doctor to test your measles titers to ensure your levels are protective. Taking precautions today is better than getting infected tomorrow.

I wish more people understood that disability is universal. You will experience disability at some point in your life, whether from accident, illness, old age, or even temporary disability. Please advocate for accessibility because it literally benefits everyone.

Someone was kidnapped by ICE in my neighborhood today, they got him by sending text messages to him saying he had a package at UPS to renew his USCIS paperwork. When he got there, UPS told him they don't send text messages and then ICE kidnapped him in the UPS parking lot.

🧵Children are the silent spreaders
70.4% of household transmission started with a school-aged child. Rates dropped during school breaks.
Transmission between classrooms and homes, students to siblings to new classrooms drives exponential growth.

And until we have one, could y’all please 🛑 pretending we do⁉️
Replying to @ZdenekVrozina
And the number that needs saying out loud. Only half the vaccinated participants pushed their peak nasal load below what's considered a transmissible level. Vacc reduces shedding. It doesn't stop it. The authors conclude that vaccines aimed at transmission will need to go into the nose rather than the arm.

People would rightly be outraged, and there would be a media firestorm. The media response here: crickets.

Stop mink farming for more than ethical reasons.
"Mink, more so than any other farmed species, pose a risk for the emergence of future disease outbreaks and the evolution of future pandemics."

Mink farming is a massive pandemic risk. It's insane that they are allowed to exist. Now we have an active H5N1 outbreak on a mink farm, & "state officials have no clear plan to rein it in."
Imagine if uncontrolled H5N1 transmission in mink were allowed in a lab... 1/4
There's an active H5N1 outbreak on a mink farm in Utah and no one is doing much about it:

This seems under-reported. I think it illustrates the danger of the virus, the need for more institutional competence, and the comparative risks of farms vs virology

Just like that, counties and states in the US have reported more than 4000 measles cases in 2026.
Wear a respirator. Get an MMR booster if your measles titers are low by blood test or if you live in a measles-active region.
If you contract measles, do not expose others.

Disabled people make society uncomfortable.
Left or right…. It doesn’t matter.
People want to believe it can’t happen to them.
That if they become disabled there will be a magic “fix”.
We challenge their denial, so they deny us solidarity and support.
That’s ableism.

You can do everything right and still become disabled. You can eat right, exercise, take vitamins, get sun, and still become disabled. No one is immune to disability. We’re all vulnerable. The sooner you acknowledge that, the sooner you’ll realize accessibility benefits everyone.

Misogyny in medicine is rampant.
Women are frequently ignored, dismissed or psychologized.
Told it’s “all in your head”.
Not trusted to know our own bodies.
Bring a man to the appointment and watch the whole tone shift.
The culture needs to change.
One-third of women in the United States have struggled to get doctors to take their symptoms seriously, according to a new survey. And of those women, more than half said their health issues have affected their work and homelives. abc7ne.ws/M2gXNW

This is why both my husband and I wear PAPR + KN95 or KN100 combo in all shared air spaces. We both wear either KN95 or KN100 when outdoors and not on our own 10-acre property. Safety first. 😷

"At this pivotal moment in human history, there is a tension between doing what is right for society and the negative consequences pushed on you as an individual."
If you have felt discouraged lately, it is important to remember you are living through a tragedy.
It is not your personal flaw but rather because at this pivotal moment in human history, there is a tension between doing what is right for society and the negative consequences pushed on you as an individual.
Acknowledging this reality can bring moral insight, something that must be encountered, and not merely explained away. That insight can bring a sense of nobility or selflessness in your pain.
