In 1952, an English teacher named Cecil Dormand secretly paid for a dirt-poor 11-year-old to take a drama course.
He never told him and the boy didnโt find out until decades later.
By then, he was a knight, that little boyโs name was Patrick Stewart.
He was born into a poor family in Mirfield, a small mill town in Yorkshire and his father came home from World War II a violent man, and he was violent toward Patrickโs mother.
Young Patrick learned exactly when to step between his fatherโs fist and his mother.
An English teacher put a copy of Shakespeare in his hand and told him to get up and perform.
He never stopped and left school at 15.
By 19 he was completely bald... most agencies told him he'd never make it because of that.
In 1987, the LA Times called him an โunknown British Shakespearean actorโ when he was cast as Captain Picard.
Then he became one of the most famous faces on Earth.
Youโve probably heard that part.
Hereโs the part you havenโt:
He spent decades as a patron of Refuge, sheltering women and children from domestic violence.
But he never stopped trying to understand his father.
He dug up a 1940 newspaper clipping that said his dad had come home with severe shell shock.
He went to France and walked the ground where his fatherโs unit was pinned down under bombing for hours.
He learned his father had PTSD, and nobody ever helped him.
So Patrick became an ambassador for Combat Stress, a charity that helps veterans.
In 2013, a young woman at a Texas convention told him she was a survivor of domestic violence.
He asked, โMy dear, are you okay?โ
Then he hopped off the stage, held her, and told her: โYou never have to go through that again, youโre safe now.โ
At Dragon Con, a Make-A-Wish girl dressed as Spock came to meet him.
2,000 people were waiting for him to speak... he sat down and talked with her for 15 minutes, making all of them wait.
He told her that since they were friends now, whenever she saw him on screen she could wave and say, โHello Patrick.โ
After 9/11, he felt helpless, so he brought his one-man A Christmas Carol back to Broadway for a full week of charity shows.
He played every character himself and donated every cent.
In 2019 he did it again, and every dollar went to feeding hungry New Yorkers.
In 2017, he fostered a pit bull named Ginger, who had been rescued from a dogfighting ring.
She was his first dog in more than 50 years.
He couldnโt bring her home to England, so he found her a family.
Then he kept fostering more.
When he said he was done with Star Trek so many people told him the show had gotten them through the hardest times of their lives.
So he wanted to see if Picard could do it one more time.
Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick ๐

Keeping cats indoors helps protect them from outdoor hazards โ while also helping keep birds and other wildlife safe.

"Please choose joy. Wear the outfit. Order dessert. Watch the sunset. Laugh often and loudly. Light that candle you're saving. Dance in your kitchen. Celebrate the small stuff. Take road trips. Tell people you love them. Smile at strangers. Do things that scare you. Say yes to adventuresโbig and small. Life is short. Choose joy whenever you can.โ ~Blue Iris

I was expecting Israel to be a little Americaโmostly English-speaking, a land full of convenience.
What I found was distinctly Middle Easternโthe people are brash, speak with their hands, and often don't know a lick of English. There are stray cats everywhere, mopeds, and graffiti. The street signs are in Hebrew, English, and Arabic. There is a mosque on prime beachfront property in Tel Aviv.
There is every kind of citizen imaginable. I saw Ethiopian Jews serving in the IDF. While touring an ancient Jewish site, I ran into a group of Arab schoolchildren also there to learn. I met a Mizrahi cab driver whose parents fled Morocco in the 50s.
Douglas Murray famously made Americans irate when he flamed Dave Smith on an episode of Joe Rogan for having never traveled to Israelโbut heโs right. Visiting Israel shows you just how wrong the west is about the Jewish state.
Just go there.

Iโve heard housework called โinvisible workโ because if done one doesnโt see it. The same with charities and policies that seek to prevent harm. There are no headlines for a home that didnโt wash away, but building the dam is a greater blessing than rebuilding a home.

The Soviet Union once single handedly drove several whale species to the brink of extinction because murdering them pointlessly was the best way to fulfil the fishing quotas set by communist bureaucrats in metric tonnes.
P.J. Fleck shared a powerful story about a chance encounter with the parents of a college football player who died years ago โ and how a simple gesture after their sonโs death meant more than he ever realized.
Fleck reflected on the emotional connection and the moments that go far beyond football during this weekโs P.J. Fleck Show.

8 years ago, 11 innocent people at the Tree of Life synagogue here in Western PA were brutally murdered in a vile, antisemitic attack.
Today and always, we remember Joyce, Richard, Rose, Jerry, Cecil, David, Bernice, Sylvan, Daniel, Melvin, and Irving.

The reason your company has bad taste is that you've confused class recognition with cultural sophistication. Your "storytellers" know how to perform creativity for executives. Actual artists know how to create something new.

We deeply appreciate the strong response by the @StLouisBlues leadership to the antisemitic banners displayed at Thursdayโs game.
The offending items were immediately confiscated and those responsible were removed.
By unequivocally condemning antisemitism and standing with the Jewish community, the Blues set a standard for how @NHL teams and other national leagues and teams should respond to hate.
Jewish fans should be able to enjoy a hockey game without fear of antisemitism.

This weekend, before elections here & Israel, I officiated at two funerals. Both lived long lives, surrounded by family. They cared the world, but focused on those they cherished. Pay attention to the world, without letting the tumult distract you from those you love.

Being a new parent really highlights just how dysfunctional and anti-family American society is. You need to move away from home to work. Both parents need to work. Work does what it can to wiggle out of paying you. Support is still back home and youโre in the madmax metroplex.
