What I don’t understand is why so many “advisors” and politicos think Alberta should think, vote or behave like BC, Ontario or any other province for that matter. What they don’t seem to comprehend is that Alberta is different. And wasn’t “diversity our strength” in Canada?! So why demand to fall in line now? Accommodating regional differences was a central purpose of federalism and Confederation: bringing provinces together in one country while preserving their authority over matters within their jurisdiction and respecting their different histories, priorities and ways of life. Provinces are allowed to be provinces. Alberta just has a little more wild and free in her. That isn’t going to change. Some of the people closest to power seem remarkably unfamiliar with the people they are lecturing. If their advice depends on Albertans thinking and acting like everyone else, perhaps the problem is the advice. Calling people “idiots” because they question Danielle Smith’s decisions, challenge the UCP or want Albertans to determine their own future shows just how out of touch they are. I am so tired of the talk, especially those in positions of power and influence, talking at me as though I should just accept what I am told. I am not a child. Explain the decisions, show the results and answer the questions. This should not be so difficult if they are delivering! And if I may offer this advisor and his friends some advice: one thing worth knowing about Albertans is that the more you tell them they can’t, the more determined they become. So by all means, keep pushing but you may not get the result you are counting on.
