The direction for the opposition to take here is to say "we will sit with Likud as long as there are no Haredi parties involved" and force Bibi to trigger another election over draft deferals and infinity welfare for draft dodgers. RZ & OY will stay loyal to Bibi on this (Smotrich has proven himself to be the lapdog of the Haredi parties, which will further alienate frustrated RZers who have served more than any demo in the country since Oct 7, and Ben Gvir knows he'll be frozen out of any unity Zionist bloc). Then just pray that some combination of things occur: alienation of moderate Likudniks peels some off the soft right to Lieberman; loyalism to Haredi parties strains the RZ/Zehut alliance enough to collapse it, and that it causes enough of a disruption that RZ doesn't pass the threshold; movement of some disaffected RZers and Likudniks to Winter; further erosion of non-Haredi-but-traditional Shas voters to peel a mandate from them, even if it goes to Likud. Key things: don't play any tricks with Tibi over the speakership, make any overtures towards Arab parties in general, or make this about Smotrich or Ben Gvir, just hammer the point about Haredi involvement in a government. This way, Bibi can't frame the issue as "the left working with the Arabs to deny the outcome of the election," or even "the left being preoccupied with the opinions of foreign antisemites by focusing on Ben Gvir/Smotrich," but rather make him plainly have to call an election because he is unwilling to sit without the Haredi. The worst that can happen is he can call their bluff and join a unity government, which is both unlikely and also not a terrible outcome. As of writing, Likud, Yashar and Beyachad could form government by themselves, and could have a 67-seat majority with Yisrael Beiteinu included. I don't like Bibi, but such a government would represent the will of the voter, freeze out all non-Zionist parties, and provide for both stability and credibility on security issues.

What Netanyahu is doing here is wrong on so many levels, but Iโ€™ll focus on two: First, his claim that Israel will be destroyed by Iran if he is not reelected is ridiculous. It is sad to see him resorting to the same old scare tactics, and even sadder that people continue to fall for them. Second, if there were any doubts, this should raise serious questions about the warnings about an imminent Iran war in recent weeks. This is all about trying to influence the election. Netanyahu is turning Israelโ€™s national security into an election tool. Exploiting a serious threat for political survival is irresponsible.
