Three years after October 7, @Erin_Molan sits down with our daughter, Pesi Gordon Roth, for what she calls one of the most difficult and important conversations ever featured on her show: youtube.com/watch?v=4Fn9Xrkb…

Dendritic shaft constrictions further compartmentalise synaptic inputs, potentially expanding the computational capacity of neurons. science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…
Very happy our work on a weird new nanoscale morphological feature is out in @ScienceAdvances. Massive effort involving different high resolution microscopy techniques, multiple institutes, & years of work to convince ourselves DENDRITIC NARROWINGS EXIST buff.ly/RlFOR94

I haven't been around for a while. I'm back to share a big first: the first 1st author paper from my first PhD student, Abi Wyllie. Definitely a first worth celebrating. So here's a summary, if you're interested in familiarity, memory, and attention. 1/ rdcu.be/2uSWUCg3PBia

🔥🔥New paper alert! Super excited to share our paper, out today in @NatureHumBehav, led by the wonderful @Nofar_Mizrachi nature.com/articles/s41562-0… To me, this finding fundamentally changes how we should think about the relationship between cognition and immune regulation:

One of those murdered that day was Malky Roth, 15 yr old American. Her picture sits on a shelf in my office as reminder. She would be 40 this year. May her memory be a blessing. After 25 years, the Sbarro bombing and its aftermath still matter jns.org/opinion/column/jonat…

We’re in the Hebrew month of Av during which we remember the lives of both my mother, Genia Szmulewicz Roth, and our daughter Malka Chana Roth. Mum’s yahrzeit was yesterday. Her Polish town was the first to be bombed by the Nazis. Her surviving the Shoah meant enduring Łódź Ghetto, Auschwitz and slave labor camps. Malki was murdered in the @Sbarro atrocity; we mark her yahrzeit this Monday. They shared a closeness for each other and an optimistic view of life. May we who knew and loved them both be comforted by the Omnipresent among all the mourners of Zion and Yerushalayim.

Thrilled to share our new #preprint, and super proud of @ZachNudels and our work on eye–brain dynamics during eyes-closed rest and sleep! Also excited to share that Zach started his PhD with me recently! 🎉 Lots of ideas and cool work ahead. Check out his thread below! 🧵
Excited for my first #preprint with @NauMatt! Gaze behavior shapes brain activity during eyes-closed rest and sleep! Gaze-dependent activity was widespread even during sleep, in many visual cortices, and altered brain-wide functional connectivity! 🧵 1/8 biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

I find agentic coding a powerful amplifier for teaching. This term, I taught with @SimonPrinceAI's excellent book, Understanding Deep Learning. The book's interactive figures are brilliant, but some students struggle to decipher surfaces presented top-down as 2D heat maps. 1/5

Using the MICrONS mouse visual cortex connectome from @AllenInstitute, we explored how local dendritic spine organization relates to large-scale cortical connectivity. One of our findings is that longer pyramidal axons form a higher fraction of synapses onto dendritic spines. Moreover, along individual axons, spine targeting increases with distance from the soma. Great collaboration with @deangeckt, Michael Reimann, @yusterafa, @Segev_Lab. biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…
Our collaborative paper is preprinted in bioRxiv: Connectivity Logic of Dendritic Spines in Cortex: Increased Inputs and Ensemble Formation biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

Everyday experience both feels smooth, and is carved into standalone memorable events. Here we tested whether event boundaries that trigger segmentation, also shape serial dependence, which indexes continuity.

We recently stumbled upon a surprisingly common misunderstanding in computing noise ceilings that can be quite consequential for model-brain comparisons. So if you care about noise ceilings, please check out Sander’s thread and our preprint! 👇

Happy to share my first paper! With the fantastic Ofer Kahane, @amiroftals and @Liad_Mudrik We show unconscious priming can be enhanced by training, even when awareness is measured on every trial. We also highlight metholodigical caveats for unconscious priming Link below:

Proud to share our lab’s first paper! Itamar’s work highlights an implicit but impactful tension between maximizing fit to behavioral data and staying sensitive to meaningful differences between neural network models.
