Neuenschwander is the name to watch
Never too early, this monthโs Draft Radar Scouting Report on @BlueshirtBanter will feature two players currently projected to go in the top ten. Story coming soon
There's no correlation between paying goalies less + winning cups. But there is a correlation between not wasting a ton of cap space on horrible players + winning cups
Two points...
1) It's less of an exception/rule than is regularly suggested, especially lately:
2025 - Bobrovsky - 11.36%
2024 - Bobrovsky - 11.98%
2021 - Vasilevskiy - 11.66%
That's half of the last six Cup-winning teams. Also there are several examples of teams with goaltenders in the 8-9% of the cap range who won going back to 2009.
2) If the Rangers had a Nathan McKinnon or Jack Eichel or Sidney Crosby to build around, I'd probably feel differently. But they don't. You work with what you have. Which brings me back to: You could have dispensed with Igor, found good but clearly inferior goalie to pay something like $6 million AAV and then... do what with that remaining $5.5?
Literally none of these guys move the needle whatsoever. Why waste assets to acquire net negative goaltending instead of just sticking with Garand, especially considering you need top 3 goaltending to have even a longshot of making the playoffs
The New York Rangers have talked about Jordan Binnington, John Gibson, and Anthony Stolarz as potential goalie acquisitions. Per, David Pagnotta. #NYR
H/T @puckempire
Idk why they're looking to do anything. They need a top 3 goalie in the NHL in order to not be the 3rd worst team in the NHL. They're obviously not going to acquire that now, so getting anything else is just a waste of assets. They're not winning anything with avg goaltending
Crazy how people will jump right to Igor for these discussions when the fact of the matter is that, in a salary cap world, net negative players are a bigger problem than net positive players who are perceived to be overpaid. Schneider at $5.5m is way worse than Igor at $11.5m
Idk why the conversation is "we shouldn't have given Igor $11.5m". It should be "we shouldn't have given Schneider + Rempe + Raddysh + Parssinen + Urho + Korpisalo $13.7m" or even just "we should've kept Panarin at $11m instead of Bjorkstrand + Schneider + Korpisalo at $13m"
Does anyone seriously think the #NYR would be a significantly better built team if Igor Shesterkin made $8.5M instead of $11.5M?
Is a $3M difference really the issue? Every team struggles when they lose their best player, no matter the position.
In todayโs cap world, the problem is not what Igor makes.
This is what you're supposed to do in order to be a cup contender
The Rangers meanwhile have a first line, 2nd line, and 2 4th lines
Rangers about to do what they always do, which is sell all assets to push for the playoffs, except now they're so bad that even doing that won't guarantee them the playoffs
the fact that drury has lasted this long is insane
To say this team is a complete joke would be an understatement
At #NYR practice, D Sean Durzi is not skating (maintenance) and G James Reimer is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

The people who say "you want Smits to play vs top competition!? That's crazy" are the same ones who say "playing with Adam Fox doesn't count because everybody plays well with him"
Meanwhile Smits is forced to play with a guy who *Vlad Gavrikov* couldn't successfully play with last year
Ivar Stenberg has been promoted to the Sharks' top line alongside Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, per @Sheng_Peng ๐ฆ
The 19-year-old has put up nine points in his first 12 NHL games ๐ฅ
Laf needed *ice* time more than anything else. His point production was, all things considered, decent for 3rd line + no power play. He's now playing 4 more min than career average so of course he's producing
Laba is good, he just doesn't have the offensive tools for 3C rn
Itโs funny that the same folks who consistently noted Alexis Lafreniรจre needed time, which he did, have the audacity to crucify Noah Laba after 88 NHL games.
Certainly makes a lot of sense. #NYR
The pair hasn't been particularly good and of course he's forcing Durzi to play injured instead of just giving Morrow even one game. 3 straight coaches this has happened with
#NYR head coach Mike Sullivan on swapping Durzi/Schneider tonight:
"It was an accumulation of events over time. We felt as a coaching staff, for the first probably 7 or 8 games, Marcus and Durz were a pretty solid pair for us. They get hard minutes, they get a lot of D-zone starts against top players. That pair has been pretty solid for us. I think the last 5 or 6 it's been a little bit of a struggle for them, for whatever reason. Durz is battling through some stuff physically and I'm sure that might be part of it. But we just felt to affect a little bit of change, maybe we'll split the pairs and see what we get. It wasn't a reaction to the game tonight, it was an accumulation of events over the course of the last probably 4 or 5 games."
and as it was all of last year, the team says what the problem is, doesn't fix it, says the problem again, doesn't fix it again. rinse and repeat. and why does it keep repeating? because the players aren't actually good enough to fix it (e.g. schneider himself)
I asked Braden Schneider about the teamโs defensive lapses the last three games:
โI think weโve given up the guts of the ice more than we wanted to. I think weโre giving up some pretty scary chances early, and I think if we can clean that up and defend the middle of the ice better, I think weโll have a better chance to come out and start better.โ #NYR
It's truly amazing how quickly NYR proved that winning games but playing terribly can almost immediately come crashing down via law of averages
