So much can be contained in a tiny glimpse of a view. I love this jumble of rooflines in Ashford-in-the-Water, none quite the same height or shape or angle, as if they've risen up out of the fields themselves, rather than subject to the hands and plans and designs of men. They looked perfect in the autumn light on this quiet morning, smoking chimneys hinting at cosy warmth inside, and nothing moving but a few cows in the fields above.

A 92-year-old man was recently target of a targeted drink-spiking incident in a rural Irish pub, an act believed to have been carried out by individuals purely to humiliate him. Intoxicated by the unknown substance, the shaken pensioner had to be brought home by the pub owner and was so traumatised by the ordeal that he no longer visits his local pub. Highlighted in the Dáil by Sinn Féin TD Mark Ward, this heartbreaking incident exposes a dark cruelty where people's bodily autonomy is violated simply "for a group's amusement". In response, new legislation—the Spiking Offences Bill 2026—has been introduced, proposing a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison to ensure spiking is recognized as a standalone criminal offence. The bill also demands mandatory toxicology testing in Garda stations and clinical settings to help victims get justice, as none of the 278 reported spiking cases since 2022 have resulted in a conviction under current laws.

Ireland's newly qualified graduate nurses are being left completely in the dark after the HSE suddenly paused new employment contracts due to strict hiring controls. Nurses who proudly accepted job offers over the summer—like Westmeath's Della Ní Chléirigh—are now receiving alerts that their start dates are on hold until further notice. While the HSE points to a severe budget deficit and heavy reliance on agency staff to justify these measures, frustrated graduates are left wondering how a healthcare system with such massive staff shortages can turn them away. Many are now facing financial uncertainty, with some even considering moving abroad or staying on jobseeker's benefits. Healthcare unions and political representatives are rightly calling out these restrictions as reckless and dangerous for patient care.

BREAKING MAJOR RESCUE OPERATION UNDERWAY OF THE NORTHWEST OF IRELAND
A major search and rescue operation is underway of the northwest coast of Ireland around the center of #stormboelo this evening following distress calls from big Russian tanker carrying diesel.
The UK Coastguard is coordinating a response to an Inmarsat-C Distress Alert from vessel MYRA.
This potentially one of the Russian ships heading to the USA with Diesel . I hope there is no leaks as it would be a environmental disaster.
The Irish air corps and Coastguard don't have the capabilities to provide cover due to the range the tanker is out
𝗢𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗟 & 𝗦𝗔𝗥 𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧
Given the extreme distance from mainland coastal stations (beyond typical shore-based rotary SAR operational radius without offshore refueling) and current sea states, direct surface intervention by coastal rescue craft is technically constrained.
Standard Search and Rescue protocol in this scenario relies on:Alerting nearby commercial traffic via GMDSS broadcast.Deploying long-range fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft (such as RAF P-8A Poseidon) for top-cover monitoring and communications relay if required.
This rescue operation is ongoing as off 20:57

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
A distress alert from tanker MYRA led UK Coastguard to alert nearby vessels for assistance but no major rescue was underway; the ship continued sailing and trackers reported it in ballast (empty), not carrying diesel, en route to Egypt.
