Turned in revisions for my book on worship with @ivpress. The latest title is, "Why We Worship." Just under 60k words, it's 10 chapters and covers everything from 20th C. liturgical developments, the different elements of a worship service and their significance, and how worship/liturgy informs life and mission. The book is a journey through the liturgy into heaven, and my prayer is that it helps Christians from various traditions recover a more biblical and catholic view of Sunday's significance. There's also an appendix on the theology of welcoming children in worship. Excited to share with you, I think pub. is just under a year out.

A good word of warning re law/gospel reductionism from @the_rev_bob
Too often modern Lutheran and Reformed preachers can fall into a kind of law-gospel reductionism, where the gospel is reduced to a get-out-of-jail-free card and the biblical text and the law are ignored. 🎥 Watch the full episode: youtu.be/t2yqe3cDSmI

The mark of a great church is not its seating capacity, but its capacity to serve and send. Small or large, faithful churches filled with people who are learning to love God, one another, and their neighbors are called to a posture of service that embraces Christ's mission.

I can't overstate how much this Luther guy discouraged Christians from pursuing good a worthwhile things by teaching them to be suspicious of every single ambition or desire.

We should be known for charity even in our disagreements, asking “Is this difference one of substance, or different ways of expression?” Even in substantial differences, we should still be characterized by patience and love. It’s worth noting how often the puritans and reformed scholastics could speak of the same men with whom they disagreed as illustrious and learned.

“Christianity is not about following Jesus because he promises to fix everything… Even in unimaginable suffering God still leaves reminders of his goodness everywhere.” Heartbreaking, and yet full of hope. One of the most powerful statements I’ve ever heard from the sister of a murdered woman.

Very encouraged!
I'm only a few chapters into @AdrielTweets's new book, "Why We Worship", and I have a feeling it will be my book of the year. Simply outstanding.

You can find a short excerpt from my book over at, @raptinterviews. God is the host in worship, and we are his guests.

Ironically, singing wasn’t always seen as a necessary part of worship early on during the Reformation. Vermigli wrote, “I affirm that devout and religious songs may be retained in the Church, but admit no precept is given in the New Testament for this.” Earlier in the same treatise he warned that churches must “not place in music the whole proof and weight of holiness and divine worship” and that “there should not be so much singing in church as to leave almost no time for preaching the Word of God and holy doctrine.” My point is not to diminish singing (our church sings a lot on Sundays), but to highlight the modern shift in many churches that made music the new sacrament of God’s presence. Unintentionally this led to the displacement of other key elements of worship, and made the presence of God dependent upon our performance (how well did we usher God in with our singing?), rather than on his promise.
What is the origin of the idea of wanting God to “show up” through musical worship? Adriel Sanchez explains the history and influence of the praise and worship movement. 🎥 Watch the full episode: youtube.com/watch?v=791pu347…
