Happy Halloween. 🎃
We at NXT/WebXR just dropped a free creepy VR experience for the night: Die Hände. Control a rogue undead hand straight from your browser.
Put on your headset and find it for free on @NxtWebXR

Alright so we now have opensource versions of
1. on device multicam egocentric visual inertial odometry
2. multi-iphone recording software (that are timesynced with ntp)
3. Gaussian splatting at acceptable FPS in @rerundotio
I decided to take some data I had previously collected that was quite messy and see how far Opus 5.5 could fix it with the rerun mcp and the context of all of the different projects I've worked on so far.
I'll break this down into multiple parts (Today just part 1)
1. hardware <- this thread
2. collection
3. time and spatial alignment
4. Post processing
5. Data cleaning
Splatting is going to be a critical part of the ego collection pipeline IMO, so I'm working on improving our current official support.
code here - - <github.com/rerun-io/examples…>
The current shipped version does well for less than 1M splats, but not so much for larger ones such as the iconic garden scene (5.2M splats). I ported over brushes kernels to @rerundotio and now on my M5 I'm getting ~40-50fps when recording or a solid 60fps when not. This is basically a 10x improvement from the current version and this huge improvement that wouldn't have been possible without all the verification loops we've added with the rerun skills and MCP. I'll break down what was required to make this work ⬇︎

Here is a little video of the booting process from SteamOS on Pico 4
The speed up part is ~90 seconds irl
I’ll try to make myself a better screen recording tool, so I can get better in-headset shots

Oh yeah, I forgot to show this EXTREMELY important part (sorry for the messy desk)
Full Mario 64 in Mixed Reality! Running in real 3D (no stereoscopic crap) natively at 90FPS and also running on my desk! 😋
Again, Opus 5.5 + PICO CLI combo made it quite straightforward.
Such a bliss to play an oldie at 90 FPS in 3D.
Disclaimer: I own an original physical copy of Mario 64. This project is not associated with Nintendo or PICO.

Capturing room reflections at runtime on Quest 3. I noticed AVP adds studio highlights up to 5 times brighter than pure white for that nice bright specular light.

A Gaussian splat of a rose. It was rendered in blender CYCLES with the lens optics plugin from @itskaiwan. #3dgs

My husband has used AI agents to revive old fonts, ornaments, & cuts from 19th century newspapers. The agents even built an editor where you can create your own invitations/pamphlets/cards using old cuts & fonts. Have been using it for @Quillette invitations already

This is how I'd fix the iPhone Duo's ridiculous sidebar. I call it Twin Islands.
Two little glass bars: one around the camera for statuses, one at the bottom for app controls.
Apps get the full width of the screen. Controls stay under your thumb. Thoughts?

JuiceBar, The replacement battery icon for the status bar is on the Mac App Store.
I made this app a couple of month back (it's open source). But too a while to get it published. Apple initially rejected it because I used Mac in the name.
Try it out, I use It every day.

now that we're fully in the vibe coding era can we please go back to making websites that look like this
Claude Opus 5.5 just reverse-engineered my CarPlay...
1 voice command + 5 min = total control: CarPlay that obeys me, ads skipped, any app on the dash and that’s just the beginning
here’s the full guide step by step:
step 1 → plug your iPhone into the car and put your laptop on the same hotspot
step 2 → paste the prompt below into Claude Code with a photo of your head unit
step 3 → unlock the hidden engineering menu - Claude tells you the exact button combo on the wheel
step 4 → hit “allow” on the screen once - last time you lift a finger
step 5 → say “Hey Claude, open the Roadster launch on CarPlay” - it opens YouTube, types the search, hits play
step 6 → add any app straight from GitHub - no App Store, no CarPlay whitelist
the result: you talk, the dash moves. anything you can say, your car can do...
p.s: works on almost any CarPlay head unit. Mine in the video is a BMW iDrive
Try it now, you’re welcome. Then read the article below on how to reverse-engineer anything:
