Funny how many of the loudest voices for conscription in Britain always belong to those who’ve never fought a war and never will, being comfortably too old to serve.

At 16, June Huh dropped out of high school to become a poet. He struggled through university, taking six years to graduate. Then he attended a mathematics class. Of 200 students, only five remained. He was one of them. Years later, he discovered that a pattern he'd proved was actually a famous conjecture mathematicians had struggled with since 1968. He hadn't even known the conjecture existed. In 2022, he won the Fields Medal. What an extraordinary journey.

This is what happens when someone unblocks a road drain. The flood water disappears. It’s a shame that so many local councils can’t be arsed to do this. UK councils have received over 1 million reports of blocked drains since 2013

The first Zionist Congress was planned for Munich in 1897. Local Jewish leaders, Orthodox and Reform, opposed it, so it moved to Basel. Jews were saying "Judaism is not Zionism" before the movement held its first meeting.

The Great Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaᵃ), one of the most famous and best-preserved biblical manuscripts found among the Dead Sea Scrolls... The scrolls were discovered in late 1946 or early 1947, when a young Bedouin shepherd searching for a lost goat near the Dead Sea threw a rock into a cave and heard pottery shatter. Inside were clay jars holding ancient manuscripts. Over the next decade, searches of 11 caves turned up the remains of about 1,000 texts, most written between the 200s BC and the first century AD. Before then, the oldest complete Hebrew Bible manuscripts dated to around 1000 AD. The Great Isaiah Scroll, pictured here, is the only biblical scroll found almost complete. It stretches about 24 feet long. Later Jewish scribes known as the Masoretes were famous for their precision. They counted the letters and words in each book and noted its middle letter, so they could check every new copy for mistakes. Not every scroll matched later versions so closely. Some preserve different editions of biblical books, showing that more than one textual tradition existed in ancient times. In 1954, four of the scrolls were advertised for sale in The Wall Street Journal. Israeli archaeologist Yigael Yadin secretly arranged their purchase for $250,000, and they’re now displayed in Jerusalem. #archaeohistories

Nathan Watts's bass on "Sir Duke", note by note. Stevie wrote it as a tribute to Duke Ellington and the swing-era greats. The famous unison run has Watts doubling the horn section note for note, one of the hardest bass parts in pop.

Today’s clock rules: 1. The iPhone clock automatically went back 1 hour. 2. Wall clocks to be wound back 1 hour. 3. It will take 1 hour to work out how to reset the oven clock. 4. The car clock will remain 1 hour ahead of time until the clocks go forward in March. 5. Britain will probably have a power cut and all the electrical clocks will have to be reset again. #clocksgoback
