The UK betting market on racing is in decline
Japan bets nearly twice as much on racing as Britain does: £21.5bn a year against £11.0bn.
Hong Kong, with a population of about 7.5 million, bets more than Britain too.
What Japan and Hong Kong have in common is that racing runs the betting. The pools belong to the sport, and the takeout goes back into prize money and racecourses.
If British racing owned its own pool or exchange, would you bet with it?

Has racing really come to this? It's time we grabbed our own destiny rather than become subservient, like the BHA has, to an exploitative industry. Full article to follow later.

Timeform was built on an idea that was genuinely radical for its time: that a horse's merit could be expressed, with mathematical discipline, as a rating in pounds. Phil Bull, a Yorkshire mathematician and formidably successful professional gambler, teamed up with Dick Whitford

Has this man's single minded pursuit of what's best for ARC, a position which has undermined his relationship with other ractracks, the regulator and even the bookmakers-on who's sponsorship and rights he so depends?
Enough is enough Martin. It isn't all about you and bloody ARC. You're causing an immense amount of damage

This interview on @bbcnewsnight with @vicderbyshire is an absolute car crash for Andy Burnham. All over the place. No clue about 'fiscal rules', tetchy, unable to answer basic questions. Why do some people see him as the Messiah who can save Labour?
When reform fails, most serious organisations pause, reset and appoint with care. The BHA has done the opposite: permanent CEO, acting chair, same unresolved structure. Continuity is not a strategy. #BHA #Racing

Just a reminder: David Armstrong was a member of the @BHAHorseracing Board. He had the position, influence and opportunity to raise, push or back all the things he says the sport should do.
A brilliant interview from the @RacingPost with David Armstrong. Mr Armstrong talks a lot of sense. With the @BHAHorseracing having lived with no leader for years now (how can they have let it drag on this long?!), might he apply to be their ceo?

Really excellent blog and completely agree. Ed's statement "we've been collaborating our way towards oblivion for a decade"is spot on. Racing needs aggressive leadership that genuinely confronts the challenges not more collaborative knitting circles.
The tipping point is here. 2025 has shown us where the current path leads. The question is no longer whether racing faces an existential crisis. The question is whether anyone has the strength of character to do what survival requires.

Put together: “gaggle of girls”
Combine the two and you get a phrase that often carries three negative signals at once:
1. Mocking (gaggle = noisy, silly crowd)
2. Infantilising (girls

What does @MCYeeehaaa think of him?
Most racing punters have to lose.
That’s not a hot take — it’s the business model.
But now we’re celebrating the losses. Glorifying them.

So Betfair have had a data breach. No real surprise. And just another reason why nobody should be providing the most personal details to ANY organisation. Imagine a hacker getting hold of your cards, passwords, ID docs, bank statements, payslips etc. Mind boggling. @GamRegGB

Why would anyone bet with gambling companies who behave in the manner which was described to me today about William Hill?
Perhaps they could explain to the general public who might want to bet in there shops why they behave in this manner- or even if they contend the punter who spoke to me was simply lying
