In free nations, we investigate crimes to see who is guilty of them.
In communist tyrannies, they investigate men to see what they can be punished for.
It’s barely an exaggeration at this point to say that progressives have built an entire theory of politics on the bedrock assumption that the civil rights act was extremely unpopular and they got it done anyway by bravely protesting and refusing to give up seat seats on busses and so on.
Because that’s not true — see the community note on the post below — they have in fact constructed a politics that’s fundamentally confused about the world and how change is likely to happen in the future.
“The Matthew Yglesias of 1963 would have been telling [JFK and LBJ] don’t touch this civil rights bill. It’s unpopular.”
I thought this was one of the more fascinating and important exchanges with @mattyglesias, where I challenged him on how far politicians should defer to polls on huge moral issues, and he pushed back on my analogy.

Mehdi conflates bill approval with protest approval. "This civil rights bill" was popular in '63. It had +16 approval (54-38) by Aug. '63 & +30 (61-31) in Jan. '64 before its June passage. Desegregation was generally popular w/ >+30 support for SCOTUS anti-segregation rulings

Wow. FIRE data shows male students are more tolerant of ideological enemies than female students are of ideological allies. Read that again and then click the link.

Turkey isn't a real country. It's just land stolen from the Greeks.
I'm not anti-Turk, I'm just anti-Turkey. The Turks should be free to live anywhere (else) in the world.

If someone says Israel, you think they mean all Jews, go get clinical help. You've been taught the whole world is your enemy and that if everyone doesn't give the foreign nation you love anything it wants, it means they hate all Jews. You're clinically insane and don't know it.

Democrats run a state almost totally without challenge for 30 years, do a shit job, then actually will come out and say they just got there and expect people to believe it.

If you dig into people’s lives that have financial troubles you’ll find the cloud of chaos. A never ending vortex of interpersonal drama, of jobs lost (never their fault), cheating, low level criminality, substance abuse, injuries etc… if you grew up with these people you know the financial troubles are just another manifestation of their poor choices. If they tripped and fell into 7 figures they stand up in debt.
I think that’s why Caleb gets so much hate. It shows how much of this chaos is self caused. How much of it can’t be fixed with more money. This threatens a lot of assumptions about the root causes of things like criminal justice and welfare.

There is a singular fork in our house that doesn’t match any other forks. For some reason, despite it having tines and looking for all the world like a fork, it almost never ends up in the fork section of the utensil drawer. I’ve seen it in spoons, big spoons, serving utensils…

Yeah, and even with step-by-step instructions, surprising results still sneak through every time.

Ladies. If you’re going to insist on drinking your disgusting pumpkin spice beverages, please buy your pumpkin spice from ethical and sustainable markets to prevent this noble species harm and/or extinction.

Just FTR, the beginning of civilizational decline started with no-fault divorce and artificial birth control.
We allowed people to legally break promises and then gave them the means to f*ck around. Result: look out your window.

What does any of this even mean?
I'm serious. What Nazi adjacent shit?
What does he mean by the 1945 reference?
I keep asking for people to be specific because I want people to say, directly, what they mean.
So. What, specifically, does any of this even mean?
John Oliver: “It does feel that the Republican Party has been getting way too comfortable with some, at best, Nazi-adjacent sh*t.”
“Nazis getting power doesn’t historically bode well for anyone, including, for what it’s worth, Nazis, who didn’t exactly have the best 1945.”

SO MUCH THIS
Because it artificially shrunk the supply of cheap, reliable transportation Patrick. Small businesses took a big hit & the consequences were a massive blow to independent used car lots, small-scale mechanics, and salvage yards.
It also proved to politicians that the government could drastically alter consumer behavior by artificially constricting supply.
So we should complain about it to infinity and beyond not just until 2050.

i am coming to the conclusion that the reason that so many of these college students so rabidly hated charlie is not because of what he said when he was holding the mic but rather what he asked them to say when he handed the mic to them.
there's a stunning incoherence to their views. so angry, so confident, so entitled, and so completely, utterly unable to explain why or what they even believe.
never have so many known so little and yet felt so certain about so much.
there is no capacity for critical thinking or discourse, not even a basic semantic grasp of the concepts.
it's just an entitlement-flavored word salad spewed forth as some talismanic claim to deference and respect.
the greatest vulnerability of the marxist midwiped is being asked to explain what they are talking about.
ask what their magic words mean, why they use them, what they signify, how the problems and processes they posit work.
ask how they would do things.
ask what they are asking for.
the results are amazing.
