The AI data center buildout is not just a software or capital investment story. It’s quickly becoming a physical infrastructure challenge, and the supply of materials and equipment is paramount in determining how quickly we can build. If we want the US to become a leader in superintelligence, we first need to become a leader in the underlying commodities required to build the technology. This technology requires more than capital and chips. We need transmission lines (copper), transformers (grain oriented electrical steel), fuel cells (scandium), and many more critical minerals that the US is fighting to procure. The future of AI doesn’t begin in a lab, it starts in the ground. A great article on data center risk from AIxEnergy: aixenergy.io/carrying-the-bi… @aixenergy

Northern Chile is clearly one of the most compelling regions to explore for the discovery of major new copper deposits. You can see why @bhp and @CodelcoChile have teamed up to explore here. Shareholders of @CobreLimited should appreciate just how rare it is to own large areas in a tier-one mining jurisdiction in the area of Northern Chile with minimal sand cover, copper mineralisation outcropping at surface, low elevations and close proximity to major ports and infrastructure. These advantages are incredibly valuable in their own right, offering the potential to materially reduce exploration complexity, development costs and logistical challenges. The geological opportunity is one thing. The strategic value of the location is another. $CBE

🚨 For the first time in history, Chinese automakers have outsold their Japanese rivals in Europe over an entire quarter ! 🇨🇳 In September, Chinese brands accounted for 12.7% of European car sales, compared with 11.9% for Japanese automakers, with registrations nearly doubling year-over-year. BYD, Chery, and their competitors are now gaining market share at an extraordinary pace and their success is no longer driven solely by electric vehicles. 📊 In October 2024, the European Union introduced additional tariffs of up to 35.3% on Chinese-made battery-electric vehicles, on top of the standard 10% import duty, but hybrids were not covered. Chinese automakers quickly accelerated their expansion into this segment which is attractive to European consumers who remain hesitant about going fully electric. As a result, their share of European hybrid sales has surged to ~32% while hybrid technology has historically been one of the Japanese auto industry's greatest competitive advantages. 🇪🇺 China is no longer competing with Western automakers solely on price, it is now challenging them directly in their own strategic segments. With highly integrated supply chains, significant expertise in battery manufacturing and the ability to develop new models at remarkable speed, Chinese brands enjoy substantial competitive advantages. Meanwhile, European manufacturers must finance their technological transition while facing increasing pressure on volumes and margins. ⚠️ Brussels is now trying to restrict Chinese hybrid imports but tariffs cannot restore an industry's competitiveness. BYD is already developing manufacturing operations in Hungary, Chery is preparing production in Spain, and Leapmotor is leveraging Stellantis' European factories. If Europe taxes cars manufactured in China, Chinese automakers can increasingly manufacture those same vehicles directly in Europe. ➡️ Europe can keep raising trade barriers but protecting a market has never been enough to make an industry competitive. *Bloomberg link: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

One of the most magical moments of my recent trip to South America occurred during my call upon President @JMilei at the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires. I expressed my admiration for his vision of a resurgent and confident Western civilization and he reached over and read aloud the three opening paragraphs of a book sitting on his desk. I quote in part: “A civilization always rests on some basic myth. The myth undergirding the civilization of the West is the myth of Prometheus. … It expresses the spirit of revolt against the prohibitions of jealous gods, which symbolize the fears of primitive peoples in the presence of natural forces which dominate and terrify them. It expresses the curiosity and love of adventure which drove Ulysses to unknown horizons and enabled him to overcome the perils of the seas through intelligence and courage. It embodies that love of action which incited Hercules to rid the earth of tyrants, brigands, and monsters, to tame the rivers and drain the swamps. It is that thirst for knowledge which led Pliny the Elder to risk his life by going to the very brink of Vesuvius in eruption. … Western civilization is a product of this attitude. Promethean implies a refusal to be satisfied with the human lot as it is, an insistence on the possibility of improving things and shaping them to fit man’s needs and dreams.” The book is called “The Genius of the West” by Louis Rougier. I ordered a copy online as soon as we concluded the meeting. 🇺🇸🤝🇦🇷

I was told EV sales in China would COLLAPSE once the government stopped handing out incentives. Well they have cut incentives as well as introduced taxes. Sales briefly dipped, as expected die to a spike before they came in, and now look what’s happened… 67% of all new cars sold in China in September were electric or plug-in hybrid. 45% were pure electric. That’s a 12% rise since 2025. It’s also record sales. Who’d have thought 🤣 .

Nothing screams energy dominance like this: China added more #BESS (grid-scale battery storage) in December 2025 alone than the US managed in all of 2025. One month vs one year. That’s not competition anymore — that’s industrial separation. #Lithium #LFP This has moved beyond a reality check. This chart isn’t “impressive.” It’s a body-blow to the West. While we’re still debating pilots, subsidies, and “market readiness,” China just flipped the switch on grid-scale storage at civilization scale. December wasn’t a surge — it was a systems upgrade. Batteries are no longer a technology choice there; they’re infrastructure, like transmission lines or ports. And here’s the brutal part: it’s already too late to pretend this is catch-up territory. China now controls the learning curve, the cost curve, the supply chains, and the deployment muscle. Every gigawatt-hour they install compounds the advantage — cheaper power, more resilient grids, faster electrification of transport and industry. The West didn’t lose because it lacked innovation. It lost because it moved like a committee while China moved like a manufacturer. This is what the future grid looks like when it stops being a PowerPoint slide and becomes hardware. Not targets. Not promises. Reality. The question now isn’t “Can we lead?” It’s “How much ground have we already lost?”

China crossed 50% (53.9%) penetration in EV heavy-duty truck sales — not cars, not buses, but heavy freight, the most brutally economic transport segment. 2025 sales hit 231,100 units (+182% YoY), with annual penetration at 28.9% vs 13.6% in 2024. #LFP #Lithium That alone should stop people in their tracks. But the real story is hiding inside the batteries. 🚛 These aren’t car batteries — they’re grid assets on wheels Typical battery sizes in China’s electric heavy truck fleet: • Urban / short-haul: ~200–300 kWh • Regional haul (most volume): 300–450 kWh • Battery-swap trucks: ~280–320 kWh per standard pack • Many trucks run 1–2 packs, route-dependent • Mining / ports / extreme duty: 500–600+ kWh That’s 5–8× a passenger EV battery, deployed into vehicles that: • Run far higher daily utilisation • Cycle batteries hard • Prioritise durability, uptime & TCO That’s why LFP dominates. 🔁 Battery swapping flipped the economics China didn’t just electrify trucks — it industrialised them. • Standardised packs across OEMs • 5–10 min swaps • Batteries owned by operators, not fleets • Trucks sold cheaper, batteries monetised separately Capex pain removed. Utilisation up. EV trucks win on pure economics — no ideology, no virtue signalling. Just math. When fleets save ~RMB 1–1.2m per truck over 8–10 years vs diesel, the choice isn’t philosophical — it’s inevitable. ⚡ The lithium demand shock nobody is modelling properly This is where it gets explosive. One electric heavy truck = • Multiple passenger EVs worth of lithium • Deployed instantly • Locked into domestic supply chains • Bought on fleet cycles, not consumer whim Unlike car sales, this demand is: • Sticky • Utilisation-heavy • Infrastructure-coupled (swap stations, depots, hubs) No smooth curve here. Step changes. Passenger EVs drove lithium demand growth. Heavy trucks drive lithium demand shocks. 🧨 Why 50% matters Yes, December was front-loaded. Subsidies, tax timing. Fine. That explains timing, not direction. You don’t “accidentally” hit 50% penetration in the most cost-sensitive transport segment on Earth. Once fleets cross this line: • Procurement logic flips • Infrastructure locks in • Resale markets form • Diesel becomes the risky option This isn’t a cycle. It’s a phase change. 🔮 The takeaway If heavy trucks are tipping: • Diesel demand destruction accelerates • Battery demand compounds faster than car-centric models assume • Lithium doesn’t drift — it reprices This isn’t flashy. It won’t trend on TikTok. But it’s the moment electrification moves from transition to industrial inevitability. Once heavy freight goes electric — there’s no way back. cnevpost.com/2026/01/22/chin…
