Where would anyone be without the internet today? Imagine someone laughs at you and the internet isn’t there to rock you back to sleep?

When my younger son was about 12 he decided he needed me to stop telling him stories about meeting members of the various bands he was listening to. "Dad, these stories you tell us, I'm sure were really important moments in your life, and you should be proud of them, but you know sometimes it takes the magic out of the music." Last week he's driving me to the airport and he decides to play me Jason Molina. I let him tell me all about Songs:Ohia, Magnolia Electric Company and The Sojourner Series. I didn't say a word. Now I'm roasting him here.

Not to pick on this guy…but this is literally how sexism works. Nothing about Haley Stevens has changed in a week. Now that she isn’t close to winning power certain people can see her as suddenly likable. Same thing happened to Hillary, etc.

YES and that's how politics works. The media decides what the narrative is, NOT YOU. which often means old shit you said.
We told you this with "defund the police", you didn't listen.
You guys keep acting like the average voter is some policy wonk who sits down at their computer and does deep dive looking at PDFs and venn-diagrams.
They vote based on what is put in front of them. Which often is stupid shit. That's why you try to avoid saying stupid shit.

I hate to be that guy, but between this, Peltola leading in most of her polls in Alaska, and Sand being up by 5 in Iowa, its pretty obvious that moderates are in fact, more electable. If we got some progressive saying wacky shit this race would be a grueling tossup right now…

The toxic discourse around The Odyssey fundamentally sucks because any film by any director has no implied obligation to depict any story in any particular way. A guy decided to make a movie he wanted to make exactly how he wanted to make it.

Marlon Brando once told Dick Cavett that everyone on Earth is an actor.
Then he proved it, live on air, by dissecting Cavett himself.
It remains one of the most disarming exchanges in talk show history.
Cavett opened by pressing Brando on something he had read for years: that Brando considered acting "not a fit profession for a man." Brando deflected at first. "We can't believe the press; I don't know what we can believe in this country."
But then, in his words, "in an effort to help your ratings," Brando laid out his real view of acting:
"I think that we couldn't survive a second if we weren't able to act; acting is a survival mechanism, a social lubricant, and we act to save our lives every day."
People lie constantly, he explained. By not saying what they think. By showing something they don't feel. By trying to give the appearance of feeling something they don't actually feel.
Cavett pushed back: "But that's not acting."
Brando disagreed:
"That is acting. When you're nervous or frightened in this chair, or distressed and angry, you know that is not what is necessary to be shown here, so you control your face. You're a highly controlled person and you have to do that."
Cavett argued there had to be gradations. He was motivated in the moment, but he couldn't wake up the next morning and repeat that same performance on command, take after take. Surely that skill, the thing Brando did better than almost anybody, was something different.
Brando refused the compliment. He pointed to the office worker who hates his boss but performs enthusiasm for his "impossible notions" day after day to keep his job.
Cavett countered that delivering the same line six times, getting "something deeper into it time after time," takes an actor. Everyday performances are one-time things with immediate motivation.
"No, they're not one-time things because it's a daily procedure," Brando replied. "The dialogue changes but the motivation doesn't."
Then came the moment the interview is remembered for. Brando turned the lens directly on his host:
"Right now, you're thinking of 60 things at once: 'Is it getting dull? Is he upset? Is he bored? Is he offended? Here's a good time for a joke.' You're doing this editing at an insane rate with a demeanor of levity and zest, and that finally isn't what goes on in your mind or feelings at all."
Cavett's response said everything:
"I just feel like all my clothes have been taken off."
Brando softened it. "I couldn't do what you do, and that's a different kind of acting; you're playing a different kind of role."
Cavett tried one final test. He handed Brando a commercial script and challenged him to read it, any way he wanted. Brando refused flatly: "No, I won't do it."
Cavett's closing line: "I'm glad you didn't. The man's incorruptible, and that's what I hoped."

In 2010, THE SIMPSONS asked the mysterious political artist Banksy to create the opening.
Fox hated it so much they were going to cancel the episode. Creator Matt Groening insisted they air it without one cut.
It's really dark!
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Fox did not threaten to cancel the episode over Banksy's opening, and creator Matt Groening supported it rather than insisting against network opposition. Executive producer Al Jean confirms: "Fox never threatened to cancel the episode. MG did think it was great." x.com/aljean/status/… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MoneyBart

Manual transmissions are dumb. It doesn't improve MPG, marginally improves reliability over the lifetime of the car, and it doesn't give you "more control" over your car.
You only say this shit cuz you made cars your personality and feel personally attacked when people disagree
Controversial, but I have no desire for a manual transmission. I can't outshift my cars automatic transmission. I can pretend I can, but my car is much better at shifting than me.
It makes high speed police chase fantasies way less cool and fun in my head, but my transmission is still better than me.
If i had a car just for the track, it''d be fun. For day to day? It's simply just annoying.

Here is a huge positive to modern life that gets no press.
I have an old 2009 Toyota, and the AUX port crapped out about a year ago. Went to YouTube. Young, enthusiastic guy explains how to fix it.
It is not obvious - involves taking the dashboard apart in a counter-intuitive way, but once you see it, it's a 15 minute fix.
There are actually dozens of videos showing how to do this, and they collectively have well over 200k views.
Had this happened in 1995, I would have just lived with it. But the combo of the replacement AUX jack available from Amazon and the video of the simple (but not obvious) fix, I fixed it.
I HAVE DONE THIS DOZENS OF TIMES. Replaced the control panel of my dishwasher. Replaced the ice maker in the fridge. Fixed a wonky sanding head on my drill press. Mastered a bandsaw technique that I use for my sculpture. On and on and on...
I think it is likely no exaggeration to say billions of fixes and skill upgrades have been performed worldwide that would not have been performed if it were not for the instruction freely given peer-to-peer on YouTube.
Take a moment to be happy about this. The busted item keeps performing, rather than going to the landfill. The person learning and doing the fix gains a sense of mastery and saves money. It's an unmixed blessing.
Stop doomscrolling. Think of what is busted in your house, find the YouTube video on how to fix it, and fix it.
