The Kyiv Independent situation says a lot about Caolan’s attitude towards journalism and his colleagues. He accused an entire newsroom of attacking press freedom and jeopardising his livelihood, yet Olga Rudenko has now explained that their animated map was used without permission and their logo was cropped out. Instead of acknowledging the issue, he chose to publicly attack the journalists whose work he used. This isn’t the first time questions have been raised about his sourcing and attribution. His Aughinish Alumina documentary also prompted criticism from journalists who had already reported on the story and the developments he later presented as the impact of his investigation. I’ve also heard from several sources about Caolan allegedly disparaging fellow journalists producing English-language content at industry events and embassies. I cannot independently verify those accounts, but they raise further questions about how he treats colleagues. You cannot demand journalistic solidarity while disregarding the work of other journalists. You cannot expect everyone to defend you when you refuse to give others the same respect. Journalism requires accountability, proper attribution and respect for other people’s work. These standards apply to everyone, regardless of audience size. Credit matters. And solidarity has to go both ways.

coming onto this site yesterday confused why everyone is attacking each other, (a lot being NAFO) over genuine issues revolving around due diligence of proper citation, attribution of work and fair use turning a valid conversation into a clown-show reminding me why i left

Not the first time he does something like this. He also used our Human Safari map without asking for permission and without giving any credits. The excuse that the cause is so important that intellectual property doesn’t matter is a bonkers argument.
Since a few Kyiv Independent readers have asked, I’d like to explain what happened with Caolan Robertson’s video, out of respect for our supporters. Our team found that a video on Caolan’s @CaolanReports YouTube channel included a fragment of an earlier Kyiv Independent video, used without permission and without a request for permission. It wasn’t just footage. It was an animated map that takes our team a lot of work to produce. Importantly, Caolan’s video cropped out our logo from the fragment. Instead of crediting our work, it fully removed the attribution to the Kyiv Independent. That isn’t citation or fair use. Our team member did what is standard when your content is used this way on YouTube: They filed a copyright report. YouTube reviewed the case and removed the video. We follow the same process whenever our work is used without permission, regardless of who the creator is. Worth noting that a removal like this doesn’t kill the creator’s work: The video can simply be re-uploaded without the copyrighted material. So I was surprised that Caolan instead chose to publicly attack the journalists whose work he lifted, and to appeal to journalistic solidarity in a case where he didn’t demonstrate any. Our team has been reporting on the ground in Ukraine since before the full-scale invasion. We’re independent, funded mostly by our readers, and we earn every dime. We’re very proud of our work, from front-line reporting to war crimes investigations. We respect the work of other journalists and expect the same for ours. I wish Caolan all the best in telling his audience about Ukraine. If he ever wants to use our work, he’s welcome to ask, like anyone else. We are all on the same side when it comes to this: We want as many voices as possible telling the world about Ukraine. But being on the same side means respecting and crediting each other’s work. Credit matters because the reporting everyone draws on has to come from somewhere. Thank you.

One of the first known deaths during the Melania Trump and Pope Leo-brokered ceasefire is a soldier who was instrumental to getting images out of Oleshky, the Russia-occupied starving city.
🕯️ Ukrainian serviceman Volodymyr Obertas, who served in the communications unit of the 34th Separate Marine Brigade “Borysfen” and filmed drone footage showing the destruction in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, has been killed in Kherson, Suspilne reports. Yevhen Voronetskyi, head of the communications unit of the Borysfen brigade, said that on October 27, Volodymyr Obertas was working in central #Kherson, accompanying a group of journalists who had arrived to film the city during a period of calm. While looking for a suitable camera angle, he stepped on an unidentified explosive device. The device detonated, leaving him with severe injuries. He later died in hospital. Volodymyr Obertas was a videographer and video editor by profession. He transferred from a combat position to the brigade’s communications unit. He was due to be promoted to the rank of senior lieutenant soon. Dmytro Voronov, the former mayor of #Oleshky, wrote on his Facebook page that before joining the military, Volodymyr Obertas was a well-known photographer and cameraman. He worked at celebrations in kindergartens and schools, as well as at weddings and public events. Detector Media extends its sincere condolences to Volodymyr Obertas’s family, loved ones, and colleagues. detector.media/infospace/art… #RussiaUkraineWar #RussiaIsATerroristState

They're admitting to what the U.S. has been doing to Canada for decades Remember The Bay/HBC? North America's oldest corporation? In business since 1670, it survived turmoil + 2 World Wars. But Americans got their hands on it and they killed it They're doing the same to Stelco
Cleveland-Cliffs CEO: I bought Stelco because I could not afford anymore having Stelco flooding the market here in the United States to the detriment of my own company. David Cochrane: Am I understanding you correctly there? It was a defensive acquisition?

united states government sanctioned mass kidnapping
🚨 FT: Residents of occupied Oleshky seeking evacuation would be taken to Crimea or Russia instead of Ukrainian-controlled territory just across the Dnipro River. This is a terrifying warning sign. Russia is preparing to turn an evacuation into a deportation operation. It will exploit people’s desperation for a propaganda stunt, put them through filtration camps, and forcibly keep them under Russian occupation, where they would remain in grave danger.

This is horrific. Residents of occupied Oleshky who wish to escape to free Ukraine will not be allowed to cross the Dnipro River – which is less than 4 km away. They will be taken to occupied Crimea or to the Russian Federation, where they will be subjected to coercive measures.
