Europe this morning has made another step towards evidence-based policy on modern plant science.
The ENVI committee voted a BIG YES: 59 in favour, 24 against and 2 abstentions. Thus the #NGT plant regulation will become law shortly, after formal adoption in Council and European Parliament.
This is a big win for farmers, consumers and our environment as it will allow more efficient crops to be grown across the EU.
At WePlanet, we have been working towards this outcome for several years.

As India digitises at scale, something quieter is also happening: public life is being reordered by systems, protocols, and technological reasoning. My piece in @TOIOpinion reflects on what that means for democracy, citizenship, and governance.

Illiberal forces are constantly trying to tarnish Europe by claiming there is widespread use of censorship and limited freedom of expression.
The truth? Nowhere do people enjoy more freedom of expression than in Europe.
(BIG exception: Russia and Belarus)

Who gets a refund if Trump’s tariffs are ruled illegal?
A must-read blog by Alan Wolff @piie raises 2 important legal points in President Trump's war on the world trade system:
1. What happens to the tariff revenue already paid if the courts decides the tariffs were unconstitutional?
The US government argues that only the plaintiffs who sued are entitled to refunds in this case. That would exclude the vast majority of firms that paid the tariffs. It’s a “David vs. Goliath” scenario where, as Wolff puts it, only those who funded David’s sling get protection.
2. Deflating the notion that the President's tariffs might go away, Wolff points out that the legal fight turns on the president’s use of emergency powers (IEEPA), but even if that fails, the administration could reclassify the tariffs under Section 301 (retaliation) or Section 232 (national security).
